I've watched a lot of reports on this, and they all seem to skim over the fact that the Rewritten team decided to put ads in the game, thus monetizing a property they do not own. It's sad, but I can't say I didn't see it coming. They managed to not get shut down and got complacent that Disney wasn't giving them any attention. And they put ads into the game and BOOM.

It was a lot of controversy for the fan continuation of club penguin, harassment, exploiting minors, attacks of other fan-made servers. It's the whole thing. It was to the point where Disney had to step in to shut it down because one fan made server was getting kids information for exploiting them.
