Pan Am TV Series - German national anthem 'Deutschland über alles' 2011

Emotional scene from third episode of the glamourous ABC TV series "Pan Am", where the lovely and most charming Colette Valois (French-Canadian actress Karine Vanasse °24 November 1983) sings the first verse of the German national anthem. In this series, she's French and was about three years old when the Germans invaded her country and killed some family members. She wants to forgive them and move on with her life, but she finds it very hard to do (understandably), by singing this song at a party (for JFK) at the US mission in West Berlin. Great performance !

I'm proud to say I watched this series from beginning to end and remain a fan of it today. Pan Am was great. I hope it comes back. Collette's character was the best (along with the spies) She sang this really well regardless of its connotation.

I keep coming to this scene. It moves me very much. It was the single best scene in this series. It reminds me of Casablanca, when they sing the Marseillaise over the voices of the Nazis

This show went off the air well over a decade ago and honestly the only 2 things I remember about it are that it was my first introduction to Margot Robbie and this haunting scene. It still gives me chills.

Once and for all: Deutschland über alles WAS the German anthem, but after the war and with the birth of the German Federal Rpepublic in 1949 only the third verse of the original is the anthem now. It starts with "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit sind das Glückes Unterpfand....", i.e. Unity, right and freedom are the guarantors of happiness."
"Colette" sings the version she remembered from the days of German occupation of her homeland and therefore she did well. And the scene is very emotional.

misterfawlty I think you misunderstood the scene.
"She wants to forgive them and move on with her life, [...] by singing this song at a party [...]"
She was actually shaming them. A fact that of course all the Americans in the room would not get. But she was singing the version of the anthem that the Nazis were using not the newer one. Remind all of them what had happened all those years ago. And telling them that she was one of those French children, forced to learn that anthem. She would have actually committed a crime if she had been on German ground. ;)

It was a brilliant scene and I loved the fact, that the author didn't felt the need to spoon-feed all these information to us and let the acting speak for itself.

This is probably the strongest, deepest scene in the whole series. You can see her disgusted face as she repeats the anthem that, as a child, she was forced to learn. The anthem of the country that occupied her own and killed her parents. The scene is so powerful because for most people watching this wasn't that important but her pilot friend (forgot his name) knew what it really meant to her.

Honestly this wholle scene was beatiful, , moving, and to my young jewish heart watching it...extremely powerful. Especially the earlier conversation with the German diplomat who complimented her German. "I was forced to learn, when I was a child"

I totally understand this scene from the series and identify with the subject matter ... my people were from both the Alsace (in France) and the Saarland (in Germany) ... they left both areas to come to the USA in 1885 before all the hostilities boiled over into war ... Karine Vanasse was the perfect choice and a great actress to make this scene believable !!!

well this anthem is very very hard to sing. she has a very good musical ear to sing it like that.

The Song of the germans "Lied der Deutschen" also called "Deutschlandlied" was original a poem/song writen by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben when he was on the - at this time british - island Helgoland  in the year 1841. The prussian government take of his citizenship and send him to exile - for him it was forbidden to go back to his nation.
With this background he wrote the lyrics of the first stanza with more meaning of "Germany I love you more than everything else."

Additionally at this time germany was divided into more than 30 princedoms and Kingdoms and the upcoming middle class starts to fight (Wartburg Festival - 1817, Hambach Festival - Revolutions of 1848 in the German states) for a unified nation, popular sovereignty and freedom - in German "Einigkeit, Recht und Freiheit" (third stanza).

The Song was first presented  in October 1841 in Hamburg with singing the lyrics to to music from Joseph Haydn composed 1791 (Kaiserlied).

The sozialdemocratic president Friedrich Ebert of the weimarer republic declared the song on Oct. 11th, 1922 to the official german anthem (all stanzas).

At time of the Nazi regime (1933-1945) only the first stanza was used - reinterpreting the Germany, germany... (i love it more than anything else) into Germany Germany... (is better and bigger and the best and should rule everything else).

As hopefully most of the people knows that  after the 2nd WW germany was divided again and so - after long discussion - in west germany they dicided 1952 that this song should be the (west) german anthem but only the third stanza should be used  (Unity of the nation, freedom (for all german - even the one in the east)).
After reunion 1991 the 3th stanza was declared to the official anthem (Before it was the complete song).

Another famous german song was composed in this age: The current anthem of the european union : The "Ode to joy" - a poem from Friedrich Schiller, 1785 -  used in  Beethovens 9th Sinphonie.

The colors of the german flag (black, red, gold)  where used first time at the Wartburg festval.

Die schönste Hymne auf der Welt! Joseph Haydn hat sie in 1797 komponiert, der Text wurde in 1841 von Fallersleben geschrieben und wurde offizielle Hymne der Weimarer Republik in 1922. Beautiful song and the meaning of the song is not understood by most Americans.
it was written in the late 1800s to celebrate the uniting of all the tiny states and princedoms into one German nation...that is the meaning...the united German nation rather than the dozens of little countries and city-states that used to be here

This a beautiful anthem that has nothing to do with WWII but the united, beautiful, glorious Germany and its amazing and nice people. I can´t stand all the negative propaganda that (especially) american series and movies try to spread about my favourite country. Disgusting!
