This is one of the few scenes in the movies (unlike the books) that (indirectly) show the power of McGonagall, of which the books did very well, but the films did not. McGonagall created this, brought it to life and expanded it to giant size - it can think for itself and react to its surroundings, and can presumably recreate itself if destroyed, because a destroyed chess set is not a particularly good obstacle. Wish the films showed more of her awesome power, she's an extremely powerful witch.

Very few people know according to the scene in the movie, Ron didn't have to sacrifice himself, it was already a winning position and could've been won without the sacrifice.

Ron was playing with a bit of Handicap, if you think about it.

Opponent had to protect their King, but Ron had to protect his King, King side Bishop, and Queen Side Rook.

Another thing of note is that Ron had to win the game with a major handicap, which was ensuring that a rook, knight and bishop were never captured, the latter two being expendable pieces in normal circumstances
