High in the Himalayas, at over 16,000 feet, you will find a Lake of the Dead. In the 1940s hundreds of ancient skeletons were discovered scattered around the shores of Roopkund Lake, now better known as Skeleton Lake. The remains were dated back to the 9th century and were extremely well preserved, with some still having their flesh and hair attached.

But why were they here? Due to fractures in many of the skulls and bones, most experts theorize that they were caught in a freak hailstorm, with hailstones the size of baseballs striking them down as they passed through the mountains. However, this is not conclusive. Local folklore also speaks of travelling trespassers punished by a goddess for defiling her mountain oasis sanctuary.

Even stranger, recent genetic studies showed that the skeletons belong to two different groups – one South Asian and one with Mediterranean ancestry.
