It was a terrifying moment for a family when Fernando Mejia went into the Kern River and never made it back. The 38-year-old Anaheim man is the latest victim recovered from the river, in what officials call the highest water levels in almost 20 years.

Stop calling it "the killer Kern", the river doesn't kill people, stupid does and will continue to do so. Common sense is not so common.

It's up to the people to use their brains to stop drownings, NOT county officials. Where is the self responsibility?

What else can they do? It’s not the locals. The best option is to have a state broadcast to tell people to stop going in the river.

It’s almost like the community wants to be able to use the Kern River to swim. Maybe after a few hundred more people drown, the county will look into creating a space where the community will be able to enjoy the water safely. But, seeing as how Bakersfield squandered millions of dollars set aside for Kern River projects, just to keep water in the river in Bakersfield, I doubt anything will ever happen. Not in Kern County anyway.

Oh there are plenty of locals going in the river up in Kernville. Every day they are loading rafts, paddle boats, anything that floats or just swimmers. AND nobody stops them. The river is either off limits or its not. So, no, I guess they're not doing enough to stop people from going in the river.
