The Biggest Event in Our Galactic Future

The future collision between our Milky Way galaxy and its giant neighbor, the Andromeda galaxy:

Right now, these two galaxies are hurtling towards each other at hundreds of kilometers per second! Don't worry, you won't need a crash helmet – this collision won't happen for about 4.5 billion years. But when it does... wow!

This isn't like a car crash. Galaxies are mostly empty space, so the stars themselves aren't likely to collide. Instead, it's a gravitational dance of epic scale. The two galaxies will pass through each other, distorting their shapes, triggering bursts of star formation, and eventually merging into one giant elliptical galaxy (sometimes nicknamed 'Milkomeda' or 'Milkdromeda').

The supermassive black holes at the centers of each galaxy will also spiral towards each other and eventually merge, releasing tremendous amounts of energy.

It's just a glimpse into this amazing cosmic future!
