He wasn’t just arguing for political control vs freedom, he was making the argument that civilization as a whole is the solution to humans deviant and self serving nature. Which, has been shown many times over to be demonstrably false. Humans in small groups living hunter gatherer lives, do not display the same negative traits that we “civilized “ humans do. And when those traits occur within that setting, it’s at a much much smaller percentage and is immediately dealt with by the group. Hobbes was promoting the old bigoted view that hunters and gatherers are savages and we need this civilization to save us from ourselves, lest we become savages like them.
