______________

MacOS has had a long history, stretching back to 1984 with the original classic operating system. It set a new standard for computing by popularizing the graphical user interface and mouse. Since that initial release, macOS has gone through many iterations, but this video isn’t about the operating system’s history, that’ll be for another time. Today, I’m going to explain the significance of the most recent macOS version called Big Sur, to be released sometime this fall. It marks a completely new era for the Mac, and lays the groundwork for future models featuring Apple’s custom-designed ARM processors that could completely change the way Macs are used.

As a musician, I’ve learned from Catalina to wait far into the release to upgrade to give all the 3rd party apps I need the chance to upgrade

Apple has to be very careful turning the desktop into a giant cell phone. Microsoft bungled when trying this with Windows 8 and alienated users so much that W10 reverted to the familiar taskbar and icons. OSX has built up 20 years worth of user happiness which is very valuable goodwill that should be embraced in Big Sur, not abandoned.

Wow. Even after 8 minutes of talking, you failed to mention a single reason why this could be the most important release ever.

The fact that they didn't call their processors "Apple Cores" is a chuffing disgrace.

Ive seen a lot of videos saying like: the icons are bigger because there will be a touchscreen MacBook" but you know what I think, they might have done it for the people who use sidecar.

Really? Big Sur is more important than Leopard was? Leopard is when macOS became the macOS we all know today!

It’s incredible that Steve Jobs was right about the life span of macOS.

When most macOS logos were just the letter X with a different overlay

It doesn’t need to be the same OS. It just needs to be complimentary so that they all seamlessly work together.

I honestly love macOS Big Sur’s redesign. Especially all the improvements to mail and messages because the current version is horrendously and increasingly difficult to use. For a company who prides themselves on simplicity, mail and messages on Catalina and earlier are difficult to navigate. I like the seamless look between Big Sur and iPadOS and iOS. Everything just looks more coherent and more seamless. But not everyone will like it, at least not at launch because of how “dramatic” the new design is. So Far I’m liking it. I just need them to releases the damn update to the damn public

For some reason apple removed widgets from the Mac with macOS Catalina but added them in iOS 14

In regards to the video, I will say that Apple started putting iOS-like features as far back as 10.7 Lion. Lion introduced Launchpad, a full screen app launcher that looks very similar to icons on an iPad/iPhone of the time. This was around the time Apple started promoting full screen features of their apps as well.

“Mac have always felt out of place”? When was this dude born? In the 90s? Macs have always felt natural and uncluttered.

I'm not happy that the Mac could become a big iPad some day. Neither Android nor iOS are suitable for productive work. Okay it may depend on what you are working on. It is a torture for me to write a simple letter in Word on my iPad Pro. It's great to be up to date wherever you are but not for working.

Grest video, thanks for putting this together. I may be showing my age, but I noticed one thing in your video that I see almost everywhere. When referring to the Mac, you show only the laptop. I have noticed that most people these days seem to think that a Mac is only a laptop, when really it started out as a desktop. I am always sad to see the desktop models ignored and left out. I just heard that new desktop PC/Mac sales are up 12%, which is incredible. Seems with all the remote work, people are finding out that their mobile devices are able to cut it as a work horse and are buying desktops to get the work done. Just an observation. Thanks for doing this video, it was interesting. 👍😎😀

Greetings. Stop at 0:44 and resume at 0:46. Then stop at 4:09 and resume at 4:56. This transition is rather weird. Is the target audience no tech-savvy, that is unable to manually remove files they do not need? I would find it more justifiable if he talked about how Big Sur presents the solution (as it is the topic of this video). There is a tacit admission that this so called awesome update does not solve a crucial pain point. My two cents.
