NLW notes that people are complaining that custom GPTs for ChatGPT are just "glorified prompts." He argues that that's true -- but that the innovation in user experience doesn't make it any less significant.

The most powerful thin about GPTs is context for prompts. You can upload up to ten files into the GPTs-Editor and given the right prompt your personal GPT will search in these files for information. Let's say you upload the manual of a board game plus online FAQs etc. you can generate a GPT that answers all your questions about that game and its rules. I think that's really a powerful tool.

GPTs for me were a turning point. GPTs can be specialized to specific roles, or tasks, and now they can remember what they have to do, and sometimes they reminding me the details of the task on hand.

I think that people who are saying negative things about GPTs are missing the point and obviously are not highly productive individuals. GPTs, for us productive people, are game-changers. I am a fiction writer and animator. Regarding my fiction, I create GPTs for each one of my novels/stories. Each one can include my world-building, character development, backstory, etc. I couldn't really do that before. I am in love with GPTs and am excited to see where we will be this time next year. 🥰

Having custom prompts is incredibly handy. But Retrieval and Actions are absolute game changers. You can't understand the impact without considering those. (And Assistants multiply that even futher)

People who said that GPTs suck probably haven't loked into them. The fact that you can provide it some data to learn from and create custom actions makes it extremely powerful. It's not just a plugin because you can give the model some knowledge directly, on top of using it as a plugin with actions. It can also use Code interpreter (sadly still just with python), browsing and DALL-E on top of that. But most importantly, building one and giving it the knowledge is extremely simple - that's what's gonna make it so useful for the average person. Simply giving it your documents and telling it what you want it to do is just so intuitive!!

Personally, I ended up not really using plugins at all, but I can definitely see myself using this! 😄 (and I REALLY hope the store will be better than whatever the plugin "store" is supposed to be)

That was a great explanation. I set up about 10 GPTs for myself as a future "time saver" so I don't have to keep writing the same prompts. And I'm able to share them with colleagues so production can go faster... if you're trying to figure out how to become a millionaire by creating the greatest GPT it aint gonna happen.

Poe has been doing it but with less technical prowess behind it, the custom API integration aspect basically allows for ChatGPT 4 + web browse + image gen + file upload + code interpreter, the first party presets, PLUS any plugins or anything written the way the plugins are written, and additional knowledge/context. All that, before first message sent by user? That's so much setup avoided which means more available context for the actual discussion. Most of my convos that are doing something like this, it takes more than half the exchange to set up and make sure I don't need to troubleshoot and refine down for specifics and efficiency. Literally have 3 or 4 different GPTs I'm working on and not for monetization, just because they're things I've wanted/constructed myself through dialogue and prompting previously and this format suits them

The simplest kind of GPTs are just system prompts. But the more sophisticated GPTs are full applications with data and functions programmed using conventional programming language.

THe difference to conventional programming is that you now can integrate AI functions into your software. AI functions which were not possible to program by any conventional programming method.

You are spot on. Amazing how others don't realise this

This is the first video I watched from your channel. I want to say my brain 🧠 thanks you for being nice with him. Such a logical and coherent content. Also without all the baiting BS. 🙏

I've founded a company and have 10000 users on my discord all on the strength of the utility of good prompting - fancy system prompts. Good prompting can do a hell of a lot more than the crappy builder makes.

Not enough people are talking about the custom actions feature of GPTs. I'm sure there will be a lot of trash GPTs out there that are just glorified prompts but the fact that you can easily hook them up to any api now unlocks a lot of power.

The fact that you can upload documents in your GPTs is a big thing to make the GPT have expert knowledge and not just average knowledge.

I don't like the lack of safety features. If it is basic, like image prompt generators, that's no big deal, but character GPTs or assistants is a different story. Also, the ability to embed a GPT into your website would be boss.

Still, A very balanced look at the topic. Thanks for uploading.

An excellent discussion. I'm banking everything on GPT allowing us to set a monthly price or else my GPT just isn't worth keeping updated. We'll see.

Really enjoyed this. Subbed! The key for me is friction. I am not a coder so even things like Zapier with the work it takes integrate the into GPTs has way too much friction and I see those as being low hanging fruit like you said where the average user can benefit from them.

Brilliant explanation. Thank you for this.

I use custom GPT to retrieve information from textbooks. I set the GPT to only find the information from that texbook. Easier than uploading the textbook every time

They can do loads of stuff!! I had one update a CSV. We hooked it up to other software and it's cut my work load already...
