It's always a great idea to backup your data. Too many people complain about "Oh I lost all my data". And my first response is "Where's your backups?"

One thing you didn't mention is the longevity of the type of backup drive you select. If you're using ordinary desktop type backup drives (WD Elements, Seagate Expansion etc), they'll only last a few years if you keep them permanently connected to the NAS 24/7. They're only designed to be on for a short time (not 24/7), which will significantly reduce their life.

If that's not a concern, go ahead and keep it permanently connected. If it is, I'd suggest maybe connecting it weekly to backup (that is of course if you can handle some data loss if the NAS was to go down and requires some manual intervention). If you can't, either use an expansion unit with NAS drives or you can also buy generic JBOD expansion units too that will connect via USB or sata. Using expansion units are great too if you upgrade your NAS storage drives to bigger ones, you can put the older ones in the expansion unit and get a few more years out of them.

For me personally, my NAS has media and a backup of personal files. The media files are generally only updated on a weekly basis when I add new content. Personal files are already on my laptop so there's another backup anyway if the NAS or laptop where to fail.

Very good advice. I lost a HDD once 28 years ago with some precious family photos. Never to be seen again. Since then I have always had 2 backups.

Brian - Thank you for making the exceptionally useful videos for the ‘rest’ of us to watch. While I am not a tech new by, I still learn a great deal from your presentations, and would go so far as to say that the subjects of this video was presented in a far more useful fashion than those provided through Synology. I do a very similar thing with my DS918+ using a WD 10TB Drive. What I really wish to learn is how to do the ‘bare metal backup’ that apparently my NAS and available software can provide. More importantly, I need to learn how to restore a computer from this ‘bare metal backup’ on my NAS. I look forward to possibly seeing you present a video covering this topic. Thank you again for providing excellent videos.

I lost half a terabyte of data in February 2019. I can't stress how vitally important it is to ensure that your personal data is archived and backed up. I learned that lesson the hard way.

I back up nightly with a scheduled batch file that distributes the data among other computers on the network and a weekly backup to an external hard drive and a DVD. Half my folders on MWF, the other half on TThSa. 25 years and I've only lost one or two files. In case someone asks, I've checked the old DVDs (originally CDs). They are still readable.

The NAS doesn't have a propitery connector. the connector is the USB 3.0 version of micro USB

Brilliant idea to always keep your data backed up.
P.S. forgot to say on earlier videos but outro music is very funky now :D

i like those units but they seem to made with real cheap plastic . Another issue is is you have a lot of them, then each one has each power supply. I always thought the manufacture should make a large wattage unit where you could plug in drives into it utilizing one plug

Being an IT guy, this is what I have seen:

1. The people that desperately need to backup never do. They just don't know better. They trust their laptop and their google photos will NEVER go dead. When they are advised to do so, they want you to do it for pocket change ("Is the cost of the backup hard drive + an extra $20 for your labor good enough?")

2. The people that don't need to backup are usually the ones that at least have a USB stick or similar external device. But they keep nothing of value. All they do is use Google Chrome to surf the web.

For the first group, if you offer it as a service, they think you're trying to profit, so they resist. When their shit does take a dive, oh boy, the cries of lamentation and regret! I spent an entire week with someone, working with Google to restore their entire photo catalogue, from 2005, which they had zero backups of. I charged them hefty because that was a colossal pain in the rear, and now they stopped calling, haha.

That’s not a proprietary connector. It’s called usb micro b super speed which is used for those types of storage devices which can hold a lot of data and need speed to transfer it

I have a 4tb internal drive in a second computer and a 4tb external drive for backups. I am setting them up right now. According to Seagate's website the 4tb external is formatted in exFat which Seagate calls a "lightwight file system" and states that it is better to format the drive in the OS's native file system. Of course the instructions that come with drive don't mention that the drive is formatted in exFAT. So I am currently redoing my backup with the drive reformatted in NTFS. I never thought to check berfore I started.

Always enjoy your informative videos! Great demonstration and spot on emphasizing data backup. With FAT32 file size limitation of 4GB and partition size limit of 2TB Fat32 seems to be outdated for hard drives. What are your thoughts? Thanks again
