This happened to me. Was invited to a birthday party that I didn’t even want to go to because I didn’t have much money. Felt sorry for the girl who invited me so I ate before I left and just got a drink (it was a lounge so it wasn’t weird to do that.) anyways- she came to me and said the party didn’t spend enough money to have the table free so she expected me to chip in $100 when I was expecting my $12 bill.

I told her straight up NO. Sorry. She was PISSED and told me “it’s MY birthday I shouldn’t have to deal with this.” Waitress didn’t want to give me my bill either! I told them they have the option of charging me $12 or I will leave without paying at all. Ended up getting my bill and cutting friendship.

For any meal with a group, everyone should know beforehand what is expected. If I get invited to a bday dinner, I'll pay for myself and at least a portion of the bday person's meal (depending on how much it is, I might just pay for it outright). The amount of this bill is atrocious... I can pay my monthly living expenses for three months on that amount!
