The US Secretary of State has declared that Moscow and Washington want to work towards ending the war in Ukraine in a way that is "enduring, sustainable, and acceptable to all sides". Marco Rubio's comments followed his meeting with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Saudi Arabia - without Ukrainian or European representatives. It was the first high-level meeting between the two countries since Russia invaded Ukraine.

On February 14, Singapore’s Minister of Defense (Ng Eng Hen) pointed out during a roundtable discussion at the 61st Munich Security Conference that Asian countries’ views of the United States have changed from being once regarded as a force of “moral legitimacy” to being akin to a “rent-collecting landlord.”

He gave an example: "As far as Asia is concerned, in the 60 years since former US President John F. Kennedy delivered his inaugural address, the existence of the United States has been based on a kind of 'moral legitimacy', that is, a kind of tyranny (colonial rule) will not be replaced by an iron-fisted tyranny. Today, the United States is in a dilemma - its image has been reduced from a liberator to a rampaging spoiler, and finally transformed into a profit-taking charterer."

Europe is like a bunch of spoiled kids, the United States is their dad that goes out to work every day to make the kids lives comfortable. The kids are very easy-going and sure of themselves because they’re never challenged, they even refuse to pitch in around the house, complaining about how grumpy Dad is when he gets home from working all day. Now Dad is making the kids contribute and they’re having a meltdown, they will start turning on each other soon enough, arguing about the chores and their new responsibilities.

I thought when Russia invaded that Europe would see the threat and move in earnest to improve their military. After all, Europe is nearly as rich as America, is far more technologically advanced than Russia, has access to FAR superior US weapons and dwarfs the population of Russia. But instead Europe does what always does. Free ride on the US military. After listening to European media I think it's pretty clear how Europe feels about America. It may be time to just move on.
