DIY Guitar Talk - Restoring a Vintage Hondo II Les Paul

The guitar is a late 70s/early 80s Hondo II. I picked it up for a great price at Sam Ash (people want the "new" stuff). I spent several days restoring the guitar back to it's original look. To do this I gutted the guitar. I also resanded the fretboard to refresh the radius and installed all new frets. The pickups are Wilkinsons with all new wiring and pots. All new hardware - except the tuners which are in nice shape. She looks and plays great.

I got one . I learned on one in the 80’s. I traded a friend when I was a kid. He saw the same one last week in Nashville and brought it to me, for memories. We’re in our 50’s now. He’s a full time musician in Nashville.l and around the USA. We both grew up In Hollywood. I left at 19 thank God! Mine is all upgraded Grover tuners, pots, bone nut and it stays in tune unbelievably great. I started recording with mine. Yours is a Samick see how the logo is made n the shape of an S.

My first guitar was a late seventies Maya Les Paul. Over time, I replaced all the hard ware and electronics with good quality Ibanez and Di Marzio parts. My son now plays it and it still serves well after so many decades.

My first guitar was a Kasuga that look almost exactly like that Hondo. It had clear volume and tone controls. Great action and great tone. Loaned it to my nephew so he could learn and the bugger sold it!!

To the creator of this channel: It's really great to see someone show some love to these "lawsuit era" japanese gibson knockoffs. Amazing work. I would like to ask you (or anyone else reading this who may know): Have you ever seen, or do you have any opinion, on the D'agostino guitars from the late 70's/ early 80's that were made in Japan? I have a D'agostino Les Paul Custom from the late 70's or early 80's, and I would greatly value your opinion as to the build quality of these guitars. I know some of them were made in Korea, and some in Japan. Mine is in pretty rough shape, but seems to be built pretty well. It's a set neck, and heavy. It's fully bound, (even the headstock)and heavy as hell. Seems to me that it's a pretty good attempt at a close copy, (rather than just being a cheaply-built, les-paul shaped bolt-on). Not that I have any problems with the bolt-on japanese LP copies either, but it seems a LITTLE bit more rare to find a good set-neck from this era. Obviously, Burny and Greco and Tokai made great ones, but you know what I mean. For every set neck japanese "lawsuit era" les paul copy you find, there seems to be 5 or 10 bolt-ons out there. Anyway, mine sure needs some love like you gave this Hondo. Great channel.

Hi DIY Guitar Talk :) I had one of these...they made it all the way to New Zealand! I bought mine in 1988 and it was virtually the same as yours...in those days I had no idea of how to set up a guitar (intonation etc) and it played lousy so I sold it....just wish I knew what I know now LOL :) Great video :)

How did you find the bridge and tailpiece that fit the proper distance? Hondos are a bit smaller than Les Paul's.

Great video. I got one of these Hondos, and I would like to know if there are any options on the nut, because the GraphTech might be expensive for me to get in the Dominican Republic. Also, if there are any other part recommendations you would do, after having the guitar for a while.
