Wow! These cities are totally awesome for you to consider as your new home!

North Carolina. Mountain views, an awesome coast, lots of good jobs and great schools, and a low cost of living. It has the great smokies on one side and the outer banks on the other side. You can see why people from all over are moving to the Tar Heel State. With a population of over 10 million, North Carolina is the ninth largest state in the U.S. and it continues to grow. Some say it’s the best state in the country. I would agree.

And, the people here are some of the friendliest around - it must be that southern charm. Overall, North Carolina is a great state to call home. But, as always, some cities are better than others - and today we’re talking about the ten BEST places to live in the Tar Heel State.

To measure the best cities to live in North Carolina, we have to use two things - data and opinion. We’ve looked at a bunch of data, you know - crime, poverty, the quality of schools and home prices. Plus, we took into account YOUR opinion - that’s right - you North Carolinians have a lot to say about which places in your city are great and which are not so great.

Let’s get started.

2922 update on Raleigh: lived here for 37 years. Finally retired and cannot get out fast enough. Huge amount of traffic congestion. Every forested area being developed as fast as the developers can build. Property taxes and utility rates have gone up considerably every year were have been here. Housing market now unaffordable. Houses are being grabbed up at absurd prices by people from New York and California who have the money.

Western NC is the BEST place.
There is nothing more beautiful than the Carolina blue sky's over the Blue Ridge Mountains and the sunsets over the mountains are breathtaking!
All the people in the small towns and counties in Western NC treat you like they have known you forever and from the first time they meet you they won't forget your name.
Low crime and good people can't beat Western NC

I recently moved from Delaware to Clayton, NC. First thing I noticed was that the people here are so friendly!! I can go into a grocery store and strike up a conversation with a total stranger! And everyone smiles and has manners, unlike the northern states I lived in where you feel like no one acknowledges your existence.
I’m so happy to live NC, and will be the place I will take my last breaths!

Gotta love how you put all the triangle spots in the list but when you need quality scenery for the B roll you use Wilmington. New Bern, Morehead City, Nags Head, and Asheville absolutely deserves a shout out. Sure the wages might be a little lower than the triangle or Charlotte but the history, natural scenery, culture, etc more than makes up for it when factoring for quality of life

I live in NC (Charlotte Area) and I know the Research Triangle area is a very popular place right now, but I feel like you really missed the mark. There are plenty of places outside of the Triangle area other than the three you named that deserve to be of the Top 10 places to live in NC list. Plus I’ve found a lot of the people in the triangle area tend to be less hospitable than the rest of the state minus some in Charlotte.

Nick, have you never been west of I-85? Everyone knows Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk belong on any legitimate list of best NC cities and towns. I'm glad you love the eastern part of the state, but for many of us, we set our sights higher.

I left my home in the NC mountains after graduating high school. I joined the Marines, served for 30 years, and traveled the world. Even though I saw some beautiful places during my career, none compared (at least to me) to the Great Smoky Mountains. Several years ago my bride and I bought a place in our hometown and are updating the old house. It is not a fast-paced life, and even though the Marine Corps instilled a strong sense of urgency/a lack of patience in me, I am enjoying the slower pace of life and have learned how to relax. Escape the rat race and come join us!

I just moved back from North Carolina where I worked with the sweetest, kindest most beautiful people I ever had the honor of knowing. Ashe county looked like God hired Bob Ross to create it. Absolutely breathtaking. Now I'm back in the land of Massholes because my wife missed her family too much. I want to climb under a rock and die.

Lived in Morrisville for 20 years and moved to Cary almost 3 years ago. Love both places. With Morrisville and Cary sometimes it is tough to tell where one begins and the other ends they are so similar.

My sister moved to Apex back in 2014; she's so happy she did. Unfortunately, Illinois is a doomed state.

I lived in Wilmington NC and I loved it. You either have to own your own business or be in the Heath industry in order to afford to live there. I know people from Charlotte and Raleigh that move there and then moved back to where they came from because the cost of living and not a lot of high paying jobs.

My friends daughter moved from an upscale Northern NJ town to Cary, our friends loved it so much that they moved to Cary as well. We visited them last summer, and now my husband wants to move to Carey. It is a beautiful and friendly town .

I used to live in Raleigh for 3 months back in 2009. I liked it a lot. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to move away. I wish I still lived there.

Western NC is the jewel of NC as far as I am concerned. Especially in the tri state area touching the North Georgia and Tennessee lines all the mountains go straight up to the Blue ridge parkway and smoky mountains. Less cities mostly woods and mountains and lakes.

Used to live in Morrisville. I know statistically it's good but one huge downside is you're close to the airport and it's very loud. I heard planes all day and night and had to move to north Cary to get away from it. I live in a small town in Gaston County outside of Charlotte now. I really like it, especially since there is so much hiking close by. I liked Cary but it was a little pretentious and extremely expensive. One thing they don't tell you is that the schools are great, but they are extremely competitive and my friends told me horror stories of not having a childhood because they were pushed so hard to be perfect. I like being in a more "North Carolina" like town with more down to earth country folk. I am close to Charlotte so I have all that I want but it's easy to get away. The biggest thing I miss about Cary though is diversity. Cary and Morrisville attracted people from all around the world and it was so cool get to experience different cultures.

We're retired and just bought a home outside of Selma/Smithfield, which is 30 miles outside of Raleigh. It's rural, people are friendly and the housing market is hot at the moment. Time will tell if we remain happy but coming from Minnesota, a cold, unfriendly state that seems determined to drive away good, sane, sober, moral, and prudent people, I think we will.

I live in Greensboro and although it has it’s problem areas it is still a great place to live with great educational, cultural and recreational activities. Many safe and charming neighborhoods and 3 hours from the beach and the mountains.
