Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi kicked off the Congress' campaign in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls. Speaking at a rally, Gandhi promised that his party, which is part of the opposition alliance INDIA, would restore the region's statehood if they come to power. "We will ensure the return of statehood to the region, whether BJP wants it or not. We will pressurise the government under the banner of the INDIA to ensure restoration of statehood,” the Congress leader said. Jammu and Kashmir is set to hold its first Assembly election in a decade. The polls will take place in three phases. The first phase of voting is scheduled for September 18, followed by the second phase on September 25, and the third phase on October 1. The results will be announced on October 8.
