What camera lens is best for beginners? Hot take: It's the 35mm f/1.8, and if you're on Canon it's the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 STM. In this video I spend the day shooting photos and a few video clips using nothing but the 35mm to show you why I believe it's one of the best lens for beginners!

What do you think? Could you use this as your ONLY camera lens?

2:19 - For my fellow Canon shooters - Canon’s APS-C is slightly smaller than Sony/Nikon so our conversion factor for focal length is 1.62 instead of 1.5, which makes the 50mm into an 81mm and the 35mm into a 57mm.

I'm sure it was pointed out somewhere in the comments but 2.8 -> 1.4 Is 2 whole stops of light. 1.8 is already 1.33x more light. Great video overwall! was entertaining and fun to watch. Keep it up.

My most used lens on my Canon R6 Mark II is the Sigma Art 50mm 1.4! It's just as sharp as the Canon RF 50 1.2, and it costs 3x less! Also, the Sigma is lighter (even with the RF adapter) and focuses twice as fast as the Canon. AND, in Canada the Sigma lenses come with 7 year warranties vs only 1 year for the Canons.

Your video footage of the model on the street looks AMAZING!

I just mapped one of the custom buttons on my Sony to toggle crop mode. Now I can shoot at 35mm 33MP or 50mm 24MP using the same lens! I was just starting to price out 50mm lenses too 🤝

I absolutely fell in love with my 50mm f1.8. it was the lens I fell in love with when I was younger.

I currently use a 22mm on a crop sensor for my talking head footage, so essentially 35mm.

1.8 is a full stop and a 1/3 more than 2.8 😊
Canon has a crop factor of 1.6.
35mm in full frame is the most versatile for sure 👌

And, 2.8 to 1.4 is 2 stops of light. You can try witj you camera. Every click on the wheel is a third of a stop. You will need 6 clicks to go from one to the other.

BTW stops move withe square root of 2(that is 1.4):
1, 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, 32, 44, 64,

I use canon RP with RF 35mm 1.8, RF 85mm 2.0 and a bunch of daily cheap vintage primes. And the 35mm is my favorite focal length. For now I can’t afford/justify buying an L series zoom lens. My next purchase would be a new pancake RF 28mm 2.8. It is so compact.

Thanks for all the information you provide. Why don't you also add a video on how to use softboxes and what soft boxes are recommended for different strobes or LED lights?

Shoot Sony not Canon but the Sony 35mm 1.8 is still a killer lens. Even having faster and more expensive lenses having a lightweight and small lens when shooting .... anything, is great. 35mm is solid, from there you can zoom into something like a 85mm or out like a 20 or 24mm.

I have a crop sensor camera with a 25mm manual lens and I love it. I think I prefer the 40mm ff equivalent look which is a good middle ground between 35mm and 50mm
