Its ok to start your career in IT with IT support jobs but if you are still working in the same level after 3 years then we have a problem.

I worked 4 out of 5 of those roles. Started from the bottom now we here lol. But he's right, we are conditioned to think we have to work an entry level job when thats not always the case.

some of these probably need work experience. you expect people to get into cloud without knowing basic knowledge of networking?

This doesn’t make sense, someone at an intermediate level with no work experience doesn’t have the luxury of choosing. I work at a service desk now, I hate it but I’m doing it for my resume. As long as you can show time within the field while working on certifications you can slowly inch towards a specialization.

So basically avoid all the entry level jobs lol

I've worked as an IT technical SDA since leaving school. Now 38 and training to become a junior network engineer. I loved Service Desk, especially the tech tickets. Only thing I'd change, is to have the confidence to move into infra/networking sooner.

I'm essentially an IT help desk of one making $35 an hour fully remote.

As a Red Hat Sysadmin myself. This is horrible advice to people. I started from the bottom gained experience and worked my way up even without a degree or a certification. I learned red hat in a support role that got me into a Linux Admin role. You need experience to become a Sysadmin, DevOps Engineer or a Cloud Engineer and give those roles requires a lot of Linux, Networking, Scripting DevOps automation etc.

I am 59 and have a network interview with CDW, it is never too late.

So who would do those IT Support level jobs if everyone followed this advice?
Seems like a lot of people these days think they are entitled to top level jobs and don't want to start from the bottom

I’ll be 44 by the time I complete my degree. Had I finished in my 20s I would have had no problem with those jobs but I can’t waste any more time.

This is terrible advice lmao.. coming from someone who has earned the CCNA. Everyone needs to start somewhere, you cannot dive into a high paying job with plenty responsibility all at once

Completely false, if you have hunger to do more, you can always achieve more anyway, I have done a year with service desk then moved to prod support and then testing …

Been doing these roles for about 10 years now. Pay is average, but I got some benefits. No micromanaging, and I get to be lazy. If you want to grow your career though, then don’t stay in one role.
