You should read miss perigrines. Also, for cute contemps. The Jennifer E Smith books, but especially This is What Happy Looks Like. It is so sweet and it will make you squeal with cuteness.

I just finished The Blood Between Us by Zac Brewer. I LOVED IT. I actually got it from the Epic Reads booth at the Tucson Festival of Books.

Also, you should read Miss Peregrine's Home. I haven't read it either but I didn't atted his wedding : P I just started More than This by Patrick Ness and I'm in love.

A great contemporary book you should read if you haven't already it "All thelse bright places" by Jennifer Niven

An Ember in the Ashes is going along with that desert themed books you mentioned liking, sortof kindof, so I'd go for that one first :) Mrs. Peregrine's is awesome, but almost a little too borderline creepy for me...but still really good!

I recommend you An Ember in the Ashes because of my story with this book. I had it with me on a summer camp and I was supposed to socialize and learn English (but the book was in English so I kind of did learn English... Right?) and stuff but I started reading this book and I COULD NOT put it down. It was completely outstanding, it had tore my heart apart in a thousand different ways, with hundreds emotions scrolling through my brain like a Twitter feed! I was literally blown away, gasping, screaming, laughing, gushing and crying. It's such an amazing book and I highly recommend it, with its fleshed out, realistic characters, fast paced action, simple yet beautiful writing style, complex, slow-burning romance and terrifying intrigue.
Gods, I love this book.
I also recommend Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children but if I were you I'd read Sabaa Tahir's book first, :).

I haven't read Miss Peregrine' s either, but I say Ember in the Ashes. It was so good! I can't wait to see you and Epic Reads at YallWest! This will be my first year. I was suppose to go last year but work wouldn't let me. I will not be denied this time! Lol
