Our final leg of the Canadian Tour found us in Alberta on a visit with Finning Cat! (They're one of the biggest Caterpillar Dealerships in the world with locations in multiple continents)

We were there to visit their Fort McKay facility where they build and rebuild 797 haul trucks. (it takes 12 weeks to reassemble a unit after it has been stripped for a rebuild).

FUN FACT: These trucks are typically run 5000 to 6000 hours per year, and are rebuilt every 12-15 years. #heavyequipment #caterpillar #construction

Equipment: Caterpillar 797B Haul Truck, Caterpillar 797F Haul Truck, Caterpillar 262 Skid Steer Loader, Caterpillar 798AC Mining Truck, Swamp Donkey Dozer

Nice! I work on 793s, we had 797s at one point but the tires were disproportionately expensive and much of our infrastructure was too small to support the 97s.

The dispatch system is usually a 2.4GHz mesh network and passes truck location, shovel assignments, and dump assignments. When it works, it's more efficient than voice radio communication. We also have full telemetry on all trucks so maintenance can pull up diagnostic information in near real-time on running trucks.

I work at the Decatur IL facility for cat. This facility produces all 797s and many other pieces of equipment! Nice to see similar processes at our dealers.

Had the privilege of building the prototype and regular production engines for these trucks when they first came out. Tandem 3512’s crank to crank. What a trip! They now use C175’s. I just retired from building the 3500 family of engines for 30 years in Lafayette IN. It’s an incredible product and these big machines are impressive to say the least!

If you had this truck and unlimited diesel for a day, what would you do?

So cool to see some of the insides of these machines, I work at the factory that builds the 793 and 797 ROP structure so I know what goes into the basic "bones" for the cabs but I've never seen a finished fully assembled cab before.

I work for KalTire and we singled out the inner rubber on that 1316 truck, also when 204, 205, and 206 came to site, we did the last few steps to get the truck ready to go to work

Great video I’m glad you got in the shop, after the last video up here I seen shots of finning and thought you might have missed out. Of all the trucks to show when saying they do a 12 week rebuild it’s the one that’s been in the shop for 5 months.

Wow I was playing with a mod for farming simulator with a 994k and end up watching with 797f truck. Caterpillar is a beast company I don't see anyone trying to be this big.

These are HUGE trucks but are surprisingly easy to operate. Very well designed and built.

So funny enough for this year, heavy metal has bought every 797 haul truck finning will build this year. They can’t get enough technicians to help build them. I work for the hitachi vendor in Alberta and we’ve done in our shop, a dozen units just for heavy metal for up north and I think we’re expecting more units to get built. 490s, 690s and 890s

I enjoyed watching your video of a 797 work in process. I actually work in the Decatur, IL plant where the 797 is built and 5 1/2 years ago I worked on the 797 line. After the test booth I helped to break them down to get it ready for shipping. Largest truck means large parts and large tools. It was a tough job!

6:20 they have exhaust dumps in regular dump beds as well for asphalt work but… the bed will rot out 2x as fast. The beds will hold moisture and salt.

Just incredible!! The size of these tools is remarkable, the people that build them and care for them are even more remarkable!
Thanks for the video, a joy to watch

I remember driving those exact 204 and 547 trucks! It was just last year when they were freshly commissioned and handed over to Syncrude for their base mine. I had an absolute blast with the F series trucks. Those trucks packed an immense amount of power.

I hauled some of those engines back and forth to Edmonton to be rebuilt. 3516s - 35 litre displacement, V16 configuration. 25, 000lbs a piece! Even those electric wheel motors were over 10, 000lbs.

I drive a 793F for work in Australia, they are so much fun! Very lucky to be able to have the experience and get paid well to do it.

I've had 204 dump next to me quite a few times now... good trucks for sure! C5 and C6 (798's) are also good as well. Driven those two trucks in particular quite a few times. Powerhouses to say the least.

I think you omitted a very important part of these mechanical monstrosities; the tires! Great and informative video. I enjoyed it.
