Why is Maryland the Shape it is?

Take a look at the modern borders of the state of Maryland, as you can see, Maryland has a very strange shape. For example, in the west, Maryland is divided into two halves and creates a barrier for the two states of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Also, why is this corner piece so strange from Its eastern edge is missing? And why does Delaware exist at all? None of America's state borders make any sense. Straight lines? Panhandles? Why so lazy? What were they thinking?

And the borders get lazier the further west you go. Further west of the Mississippi, the surveyors were all like, "You know what? Fuck it! Squares and rectangles are easier to manage! Squares and rectangles for everyone!" I'm all for redrawing the state lines along natural barriers such as rivers and mountain ranges instead. That'd make so much more sense than the clunky, Africa-like state lines we have now.
