What a surprise! I like the choice of Chandragupta! Though someone more aggressive than Gandhi is certainly terrifying to think about.

Very happy to see that Gilgamesh has finally got a friend he can take to the gym. Tomyris just didn't like to surprise him with extra gym days and Gorgo only cared about the end results and prestige of working out but Gilgamesh loves enjoying the process with friends. Chandragupta looks like he will enjoy the process of working out a lot. Rise and Fall here we come.

*Fun fact:* Chandragupta Maurya, the first Indian emperor, built his empire on an unending string of battles and victories. He was *LITERALLY* more aggressive than Gandhi. At a young age he, with his mentor, built an army out of mercenaries and rebelled to put an end to the large, poweful and corrupt Nanda kingdom (which Alexander couldn't invade). Then he declared himself emperor of India attacked minor kingdoms in western India who were under Alexander's protection and annexed them all.

Then Chandragupta attacked one of the finest generals of the time - Seleucus Nicator. He steamrolled him and took away almost the entire eastern half of his empire, only stopped by the harsh desert terrain that had been the bane of Greek armies. Chandragupta in his characteristic fashion suddenly changed his mind offered an alliance to Seleucus instead. While he annexed more lands, Greeks became his allies. He gave them 500 war elephants from his army, and in return married Seleucus' own daughter.

He was mentored and led by one of the finest statesmen and political theorists of all-time in the world - Chanakya (who makes Machiavelli look like a harmless newbie by comparison). That man designed the basis of imperial Indian government that stayed intact in one way or another until 1858 (the collapse of Indian empire), and designed an espionage and justice system so strict that Mauryan reign is still remembered as the most authoritarian and strong government (alongside being harsh except for a brief period later) in Indian history.

Chandragupta proceeded to build the largest army seen on earth until that time, recorded by Greeks in the book "Indika". He proceeded to use that army to annex kingdoms. Unlike the regular tradition in India of leaving old rulers of a dynasty intact as vassals, he threw them out and exiled them. He created a cosmopolitan court in the gigantic city of Pataliputra, largest in its time and a major Indian city ever since. By the time his reign ended, Mauryan India was the most powerful and prestigious empire on earth.

And out of nowhere, in 297 BCE he decided to retire (probably the only major Indian emperor to do so willingly). He became a Jain monk...renounced all violence and moved to an isolated monastery in southern India. His son Emperor Bindusara and grandson Emperor Ashoka the Great (who is in Civ4) took his already enormous empire to the peak of grandeur and unified India. An empire that powerful would not appear in India until Guptas and then Mughals.

So I don't have to worry about Gandhi getting angry at me in 2000BC for not having nukes quite as much now? Great!

What language is Chandragupta speaking in? It's probably not Hindi, which is a good sign. I'm guessing it's either Sanskrit or Magadhi Prakrit. It's good enough if they went for Sanskrit. However, if it's Prakrit, the devs have done a really commendable job researching it.
