It is common for Chinese diplomacy to say one thing abroad in English (or translated for English speakers) and then say exactly the opposite at home.

Its absolutely wild how they cleared all of the homeless people out of San Fransisco ahead of Xi's visit. It reminds me of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver when they did the same thing. I guess there's only two situations where our elected officials will actually tackle this problem: the Olympics and visits from foreign tyrants.

For all China's talk of cooperation, they aren't willing to compromise on anything. The only thing that looked like it might actually go anywhere from the talk was on collaboration on Fentanyl. Everything else looks to be hot air to me. Fentanyl only looks to be possible because China and US interest happen to align, as the US wants to stop the drug entering the country and China doesn't want wealthy drug lords being created in their own.

I believe he thinks he's playing us, his foreign messaging often doesn't match actions, the friendlier he acts the less he intends to be cooperative.

I would add that the eastern etiquette cultures are typically non-confrontational in a face to face setting. Can’t tell you how frustrating it was for me to have someone agree to meet and then deliberately be somewhere else at the appointment time.

From a western perspective it’s a bunch of lies. Kinda like what you said Peter.

There are many signs that China is actively preparing for war. They are trying to switch to a war time economy in an attempt to replace their crumbling construction industry and are doing other weird stuff that is highly unusual and alarming to people who know China, like pushing for people to eat more conserved food and replacing freshly cooked school cafeteria lunches with military style food rations. That is really weird by Chinese standards, because of how incredibly important fresh food is in Chinese culture.

It also seems as if the vanishing of the foreign minister, the defense minister and a bunch of generals, including pretty much the whole leadership of the missile force, suggests that they were purged because they weren't appropriately enthusiastic about Xis future plans or didn't tell him what he wanted to hear about war readiness.

First up, with respect, Xi met the Australian PM a week or so ago and he’s a ‘real’ leader who’s country supplies China with vital commodities that it can’t do without, so has some clout, and is the only country, excluding the US, that showed the world that it could stand up to economic coercion and threat by China and stare it down.
Xi is the guy who said there’d be no militarisation of the South of China Sea so all he’s doing is buying time, nothing else.
