Climate crisis: Widening emissions gap threatens meltdown | DW News

A new United Nations report finds that current national emissions pledges will lead the world to dangerous levels of heating. The window to rein in climate-wrecking emissions and limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is fast closing, says a UN report. Societal transformation may be the only way to avoid a coming calamity.

I can’t even say anymore how many of these warnings I’ve heard or read. But I can tell you the amount of politicians who openly and honestly reacted publicly after those warnings: 0.

This is quite literally the movie "Don't Look Up" playing out in real life. Most governments will say they've got "more pressing issues" to attend to. For some, that's securing elections, for others that's instigating wars ...

With so much of global warming impact coming from such a concentrated group of people, it's borderline futile for common folk to even try do something about it. I do still are (a lot) and live as consciously about the environment as I can be. But all that effort is immediately offset for decades by one tiny decision by an oil company.

Global warming should have been the single biggest issue for all governments. All your wars and elections don't matter if there's no livable planet anymore. But I guess you'll just hear "well, it won't happen in my life time, so ...."

So why did they choose to increase co2 emissions by not having a virtual meeting. Typical 'do as I say but not as I do'

Maybe if the US blows off a few more gas pipelines it would help!

Stop that -- all talks, expectations, and goals surrounding the climate are on hold until:
1) the world economy has stabilized,
2) the pandemic was stabilized,
And
3) the war stabilizes.

So mass human infestation brings its own solution.

That means that 50% of the worlds population should move away from temperate to warmer regions.

Heating oil and diesel are getting very scarce in the US. Diesel is being sent to Europe since they stopped purchasing Russian oil. Ask those people preparing for the cold winter about the environment?

It is the lag between cause and effect that has allowed governments and climate change deniers to obstruct the changes needed to save life on earth. Unfortunately for such people, the changes in climate are now obvious to everyone. Unfortunately for everyone we are now at a stage where global warming is accelerating rapidly, so that each years climate is noticeable worse than the year before.
It is possible that the world's climate has already passed a tipping point in which no human action can prevent the inevitable switching of the global climate to a new stable state, which may not be compatible with life on this planet.
The climate is regulated by a complex network of natural feedback systems, which previously were predominantly negative, meaning they opposed major temperature changes. Some of these no longer function, or are being modified to produce positive feed back, accelerating the changes in the earth's climate.
As humans are the source of the pollution that is producing the rise in the earth's average temperature, one might speculate that one natural feedback mechanism might be the elimination of the source of pollution. Certainly global warming is likely to kill a significant number of humans in the decades to come, and fewer humans mean less greenhouse gas generation. So what level of human population reduction is likely to cut green house gas emissions to the point where it impacts on the earth's average temperature? I have not seen any studies on the subject, but as a wild guess, an 80% reduction in the earth's human population, might allow the remaining 20% to survive. So governments and climate change deniers should consider if they think they and their families will be in the 20%.
The distribution of deaths will not be uniform across the planet, and the victims may not be killed by heat stroke alone, famine, floods, water shortages, extreme weather events, and disease will claim the lives of even those living in the more temperate latitudes.

just get everyone to turn on their air conditioners for a week or two and problem solved.

What I can't stop thinking is: why do people in these countries still make babies when they know that they can't feed them?

Nope, no climate crisis. The weather always changes.

Last year's EU: Developing countries must use clean energy like us, and cannot burn coal;
This year's EU: The coal we burn is environmental and righteous,it can absorb carbon dioxide to protect the environment🤣

Where is the Climate Science? Today, right now, we have surpassed 1.5 C. given the 1750 Baseline. Thank you

Too many people employed in energy sector. Energy crisis in Europe clearly shows, how far away we are from achieving the goals. Can't happen in 50 years, unless the nature itself destroy the energy infrastructure.
