i just need a gas mask to protect me from cigarette smoke. I need to be able to sit with my parents and watch tv while they chain smoke. not just for my protection but, to make a point of course.

by the way - thank you for introducing me to that mask!! you inspired me to get one, and it arrived some weeks ago. for all you watchers: it is really comfortable!! best mask i ve ever worn. the feeling is awesome, it feels just like it is a part of your body, very natural.
of course i tried to sleep with it strapped on tightly, failed a couple of times, but this is me i guess. i have to train wearing it at night, i will keep trying!

Essentially it is. Both are made by the same manufacturer, and the Ocean Reef is outfitted for diving, while the SGE is for NBC protection. And of course I swim with the Ocean Reef mask! Pricey, but worth it!!!

I seriously doubt it's better constructed, as it appears to be a civilian mask. As far as cleaning goes, you don't really need to clean the mask twice a day if it is made of butyl rubber. I clean mine every so often. The military masks made of butyl rubber are superior in that they are proof against blister agents, whereas a silicone rubber mask is degraded by said agents.

And yes, it is unbelievably comfy to wear. It was designed to be worn for 5-6 days without being removed, and though I haven't tried that, I do believe their claim. The silicone is hypo-allergenic, and the lack of seams and the edgeless curves are all well-thought-out.

@acfjames The British Military does use the FM12. It is sometimes used by police and sometimes by the SAS. The majority of FM12s are used by the dutch, danish, and norwegian armies. The S10 is still current issue though for the UK. And I had two SF10s, one of them I got on eBay and the other I traded an M40 for.

This one is my favorite too. Very comfortable. I changed up the straps to the cloth elastic for extra comfort.

Good luck! I've picked up a few 400/3s on eBay also, but the exhalation valves died on them and they are difficult to replace, so I splurged on a full price mask from AGM and it has been great.

The 400/3 and bb version have two additional side ports for purchaseable filters on-site. So you can aim a rifle right or left handed comfortably :))

Congrats, dude! Just a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol cleans up the silicone super easily, and it doesn't affect the silicone at all, unlike any mask made from rubber :)

@scoundify No, the silicone on this particular mask IS that soft and edgeless, and produces absolutely zero irritation, and is super comfortable the whole time. The very light impressions puff up on the skin nicely in the shower. The grease build-up is easily prevented by wiping the silicone with rubbing alcohol before every use.

Trust me, the construction and materials in the SGE are of a higher order, and this mask does offer a drinking tube option which I don't yet own. The silicone rubber is superior to natural rubber (or butyl) in that you can clean it with rubbing alcohol and it does not affect the silicone at all--I've cleaned this mask twice a day for years, and it has not aged whatsoever; cleaning normal rubber causes the rubber to dry and crack, so I don't buy rubber masks anymore.
