SXTL Bow Drill Kit

This kit was totally worth what I paid for it. I’m sorry for underestimating it at first. For novice firemakers this kit can provide a really easy, fun, confidence building experience. The two thunderheads and Egyptian bows that I’ll keep are alone worth the investment. They just work!

I should note that in most cases I needed to cut the notches back into the divots a bit more. Right out of the box many of the notches didn’t go into the fireboard divots at all, and some just barely. The only fails we had were for that reason – the dust would just collect on the top of the fireboard, not in the notch, and so an ember wouldn’t form.

This dual bow drill kit was only $19.50 on eBay (May, 2021). Give it a try. You might find that it opens up a whole world of fire-by-friction possibilities for you or some young person you are trying to teach.

P.S. I've read that the fireboard is Balsa. I still think the spindle is Poplar. I can't confirm either.

great little kits i got 3 of them to teach the grand kids but there wasnt a fire board in any of the kits. these had the "bush craft" brand on it.. guess not a biggie i can use any wood for my fire board.

You did such a great video! I can't remember how I sold you this for only 15 bucks, because we are selling it for $19.99 on Amazon, probably you sent a offer and I just accepted LOL.
For your questions and concerns
1. The spindle and thunderhead are made from Pine, we choose to use hard wood so they can last.
2. The fireboard is made from Paulownia, a tree mostly grown in East Asia, it is the softest wood we could find and it significantly decreased the difficulty for making friction fire
3. The spindle head is no longer flat, it is now rounded and fits in the divot perfectly
4. I have failed a couple of times when the notch is not cut to the divot, this is a issue that we should improve next.
