These are the flags of Indonesia and Monaco. Why are they so similar? Monaco first adopted the red-and-white design in 1881. Indonesia adopted the same design in 1945 after gaining independence from the Dutch. When Monaco noticed the same flag design, they asked Indonesia to change theirs. Monaco felt it was urgent because, in 2 weeks, every nation would display their flags at an International Congress in Monaco. Indonesia refused to change its flag, saying it was part of its Constitution. As a result, both countries retained their flags, which remain the same to this day.

Indonesian Flag are based from their ancient monarch of Majapahit Kingdom
Which is already used on 1200 AD not on 1945's

Edit : i just read an impressive article of Kudadu Inscription dated in 1294 AD there's a one of letters said "Jayakatwang of Kadiri Kingdom use their Red-White banner to pursue Raden Vijaya's army from the east of hanyurih" (Kudadu Inscription 3rd line - phase 4)

It means, Kadiri Kingdom used this banner first before the Majapahit exist .

The reason why Indonesia continues to insist on flying the red and white flag for its own country, because the colors of its flag are similar to those of the great kingdoms of the past that once controlled its territory. namely the Majapahit kingdom. This kingdom was founded around 1200 AD

Indonesian flag are taken from majapahit royal flag from 13th century to 16th century. Majapahit it self have two flags. Royal flag and imperial flag. Royal flag have the same design as indonesian flag. The imperial flag it self are red white stripes, the same design of red white stripes that used in US, Liberia and Malaysia flag, which also used by British East India Company flag, and now used by Indonesian Navy as Naval Jack Flag.

Although this flag was taken from majapahit royal flag, the flag already exist and used by much older Kediri kingdom since 7th century AD, with the exact same design. During dutch colonialism, red white flag are often used as flag of resistance in many indonesian kingdoms, such as in the famous Prince Diponegoro war.

Because of this, Indonesian civilization already using this flag since 7th century AD. You can also find this flag carved on Borobudur temple relief

The ratio of Monaco's flag is 4:5 while Indonesia's is 2:3, and the red color is darker for Monaco's flag. The colors of the Indonesian flag come from the banner of the 13th century Majapahit Kingdom.

Please consider why Indonesia choose red and white flag. The history said that Indonesian flag is inspired by Majapahit. The first Imperium which conquer Indonesia during 13th century under Gadjah Mada.

The red and white on the Indonesian flag is earlier than the Monaco flag! The red and white of the Indonesian flag itself is taken from the flag of the Majapahit kingdom which has united our nation! Fun fact: The Majapahit Kingdom was one of the largest and most powerful archipelago kingdoms in history. Founded in 1293 by Raden Wijaya, this kingdom reached the peak of its glory during the reign of Hayam Wuruk (1350-1389) with Mahapatih Gajah Mada who was famous for his Palapa Oath.

Indonesian flag was originated from Majapahit Empire 13th century. Many empires there at the time also use red-white flag. The resistance ripping the blue part of dutch flag also heavily influenced by Majapahit Empire flag. The original design has many stack of red and white and still used on naval flag. Though the actual origin maybe older than that.

Monaco originated from House of Grimaldi coat of arms in 14th century (little resemblance tho)
