Pro-Ject Phono Box E phono preamplifier review - Hifi reviews from Fluteboy

Want to listen to vinyl? A phono preamplifier is essential if your amplifier was made after the mid 90s. Those tiny signals need a bit of a boost! This example from turntable manufacturer Pro-Ject fits the bill perfectly by being affordable and sounding terrific. What a shame my turntable cannot be as cooperative.

Very helpful video thanks. I'm slowly bringing a Dual CS505-2 back to life. I've had to replace both belts this weekend and also de-grease a pin near the motor switch. But when I plugged it into my amplifier there was almost no volume. I was advised that I needed a pre-amp and that brought me here to your suggestion. So now I've a Pro-Ject Phono Box E on order. Thanks for the info!

I have a really silly question, my speakers (speaker box 5's) have a red and a black on the back. How do I connect them both to this preamp? It only has 1 set of outs.

I’m listening vinyl with YouTube compression

Majored in signal engineering: nothing wrong with liking the vinyl and sound of it - a very subjective topic it is. Also good engineering on some of those amps, no doubt about it.
However, dont think "we went CD", because we actually went digital. It made systems more robust and in this developement vinyl does not fit: too large to be used as storage devices, hold way too little data, no random and slow access that degrades fast the more you access it - only negatives! Also, CDs are cheaper to make, more efficient process of production and distribution - same with blueray (although br still outperforms netflix by a lot, audio and image quality are uncomparable if you care for it).
I know you love your vinyl and you like the (un?)quality of it and that is fine, tho with that material that can only be so fine, your needle can only pick up so much nuance, you are losing actual data in the process that we can capture nowadays with better ADs. I like vinyl aswell, but what matters more than the actual medium that is holding it is a good sound engineer recording and mixing it.

What do I do if my turntable doesn't have a ground wire? Will grounding the pre amp to my integrated amplifier work?

I just purchased an Audio Technica LP-140X, but it hasn’t been delivered yet. I need a phono stage, but I was looking at another Pro-Ject, the Phono Box S2, which is a step or 2 up from the Phono Box E, and is around $225.00 AUD. I have also ordered an Audio Technica VM540ML RigB which I have purchased from Simon Clark from the UK. Do you think that I should stick with the Phono Box S2 or should I just get the cheaper Phono Box E?

So sorry to hear you wanting to get rid of the Dual... I have got one of those phono stages from pro-ject, the MM one. Too much noise so I bought a real Technics amplifier from the seventies.

I set up the phono box e and got the in and out cables the wrong way. I turned on my amp and turned the volume up and it made a light bang and the amp turned off. I did this a few times before realising the problem. Would this have damaged my system?
