Entry Level Pro-Ject Phono Box (E/MM/DC) What's going on?

There are three different Phono Preamps by Pro-ject around the same price range. The Phono Box E, the Phono Box MM, and the Phono Box DC. Are there actually any differences between them? We'll find the answer to that in this video.

I have compared the phono MM amongst the schiit mani, art dj, Behringer pp400 and the pyle pp999. eqpt used:sl1200LTD, rega carbon, monster speaker cable nmc, naim 72 + 140 & rogers ls3/5a 15ohm. I would rank them from worse to best: pyle<pp400<mani<art dj<pro-ject mm. the mm produced the most natural and crisp sound without any hint of brightness or listening fatigue whatsover. bass is also deep, punchy and tight. made me want to listen to songs I don't normally listen. read through all (yes all of them) the comments in your videos and decided on the mm and im glad I did. thank you for your efforts

I have been using the Phono Box E, with a Rega P3/Exact cartridge for around 3 months now. Everytime i listen i am amazed how good it sounds for the low price (i payed $129 AUD).

Even with the compression, the MM/MC sounds better. The individual instruments have more clarity and are more distinguishable, with the MM sounding more muddied in comparison. It's not a HUGE difference but to my ear the MM/MC does have the edge...

HI. It would have been interesting here to hear a null test comparing the two. Otherwise thanks for your great work! I really appreciate it, it's been useful to me for comparing cheap phono pre and Nagaoka cartridges.

Phono Box DC has subsonic filter, the others dont.

To my 51 year old ears, the MM had slightly more treble.

Would I need a bigger pre-amp to drive JBL LX-400 speakers thru my Yamaha HTR-5730 Receiver? I just use it as a 2 channel stereo system. Not as 5.1. My turntable has a built in pre-amp but I'd like a boost for vinyl listening. What do you think?

Nice Video, but how do the compare to the Phono Box S2?

was intending to get another project phono box mm (the black one in this vid) as a backup set. but seems like the phono box e (the white one in your vid) is cheaper. just to confirm the sound quality is identical among these 2, just the casing is different? thanks

Tried this with an ATLP60 that has an existing preamp to compare if it would improve the sound quality and I could not see much of a difference. Wish I had the same experience as others here with this preamp.

...any major differences n sound quality btw those 3 models and the Phono Box S, which is slightly more expensive?

Just bought the MM/MC mk2 after watching this and other reviews. Does anyone know if it is better than the original ones?

Yeah, I heard ZERO difference as well. I own a Pro-ject Tube Box S and this makes me wonder how much different it sounds compared to these three. I think it's a great sounding pre-amp, but I'm wondering if it was worth the price difference.

I paid £60 for one and tested it today. It was absolutely terrible and worse than bad. Maybe it was a fake.

It’s in the bin now
