Extreme cold weather can negatively impact lung health, particularly for individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions like asthma or COPD. Cold air is often dry, and when inhaled, it can irritate the airways and cause bronchospasm, leading to symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.

The body naturally warms and humidifies the air through the nasal passages before it reaches the lungs. However, in extreme cold, these defenses may be insufficient, allowing cold air to reach the lungs and cause irritation. Physical activity in cold weather, such as shoveling snow, can worsen this by increasing the rate and volume of cold air inhaled.

To protect against the cold, using a scarf or mask over the mouth and nose can help trap moisture and warmth from exhaled breath. For individuals with respiratory conditions, having an adequate supply of medications and ensuring access to medical equipment like inhalers or oxygen concentrators is crucial.

Additionally, cold air can dry out the respiratory tract's mucous membranes, increasing susceptibility to viral infections such as the flu, which can further worsen lung health. Therefore, preventive measures like staying indoors, wearing appropriate coverings, and having an emergency plan in place are essential for protecting lung health during extreme cold weather.

I'm almost 78 and I walk to the store most mornings. Yesterday I noticed a tightening as I almost reached the store. Today was colder and I was hit half way to the store. Bronchospasm for sure. Great to be able to find this site and see what happened to me. I do have a cold weather mask and will dig it out for sure. A BIG THANK YOU.
