Algebra I on Khan Academy: Algebra is the language through which we describe patterns. Think of it as a shorthand, of sorts. As opposed to having to do something over and over again, algebra gives you a simple way to express that repetitive process. It's also seen as a "gatekeeper" subject. Once you achieve an understanding of algebra, the higher-level math subjects become accessible to you. Without it, it's impossible to move forward. It's used by people with lots of different jobs, like carpentry, engineering, and fashion design. In these tutorials, we'll cover a lot of ground. Some of the topics include linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, systems of equations, factoring expressions, quadratic expressions, exponents, functions, and ratios.

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

I remember doing this in class a few moths ago in 7th grade. I was so amazing at this. Now it's summer, and I don't know what the hell this is about. I'm on here again because I forgot how to do this stuff for my homework.

Thanks a lot. My son is in 8th Grade and has always struggled with two-step equations. Now he knows what he's doing and passed his homework with a solid 10 out of 10.

Why did he change 5x-(3x+2)=1
to 5x-3x-2=1? I'm confused on that one

At 4:17 he could have moved the -2 to the other side of the = sign to get 5X-3X=1+2 witch would workout to 2X=3 and then divide by 2 to get the X value.

10:00 to solve 5q-35=8 he could've done 5q=8+35 work that out too 5q=43.

for the second problem, why didn't you do the parentheses first? I thought you had to do parentheses at the begginning of any problem that contains them
