Discovery Green is getting ready to celebrate its 15th birthday in 2023. @getmoneytv stopped by to wish us a happy birthday and to share his favorite memories at the park. We love you, Paul Wall!

What's your Discovery Green story?

For its 15th anniversary, Discovery Green is celebrating the vibrant culture that transformed surface parking lots into one of the most iconic Houston locations. It’s hard to believe now, but before the park opened the area in front of the George R Brown Convention Center was a desolate expanse of concrete.

With extensive community participation, the Discovery Green Conservancy flipped the script: They tore down those parking lots and put up a paradise. In doing so they paved the way for other successful green spaces. Through Discovery Green’s example of what’s possible, Houston is now a city that values its parks.

The creation of Discovery Green 15 years ago ushered in a revival of Houston’s downtown shaping it into a place to live, work and play. Since opening, the 12-acre outdoor cultural center has welcomed more than 20 million visitors and the Conservancy has produced over 10,000 free events including concerts, public art, community festivals, fitness classes and more.

For Houstonians and tourists alike Discovery Green is more than just a park. It’s a place to discover the diversity of traditions that exist in this city. It’s a “village green” where Houstonians go to meet one another and build community in a joyful and relaxing atmosphere.

Houstonians describe Discovery Green as everything from a peaceful downtown oasis to a playful village green. It’s a place as diverse as the city it lives in.
