What It's Like Being White in Africa

In 2018, I had the pleasure of visiting 21 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. I absolutely love this continent. It offers incredible nature, culture, and experiences that you cannot find anywhere else.

In a sense, I feel like traveling to Africa is the only "real" traveling that I've ever done.

But I have noticed a lot of scamming and bribery happening to me in African countries lately, and that's why I made this video.

I know this post will get a lot of hate mail, and that's okay. I want to hear your opinions, thoughts, and suggestions on this subject.

I could lie to you guys and say that Africa is 100% safe as a non-black person, but that's just not the case. Perhaps it would be safer if I didn't travel solo, but I always have.

The point of this video is that if you physically stand out in any place, you will be treated differently. And I wish someday, in this amazing world of ours, that this will not be the case.

Scamming tourist has not so much to do with your skin color but simply with the fact that you’re a tourist! I get scammed when I travel back to visit family, too and I am black! And that is as soon as they hear my accent when I speak the local language or seeing that I’m dressed differently. It’s simply because of the fact that I am not a local to them so they try in every way to get money out of me. However that is the case not only in Africa but in most Asian and Southamerican countries, too.

To be honest everyone will scam tourists, especially on countries that maybe aren't so wealthy. Is really sad

It's only natural... However, I disagree with "Asian in Europe" and "Hispanic in Australia" being in any way a similar experience to "White in Africa"!

Just a disclaimer... his African American friends will also get finessed just like this. A foreigner is a foreigner. It doesn’t matter the skin colour

I’m an Arab I went to Iran I got ripped off and my phone was stolen in Iran.I have same religion as them I have same skin colour I just wanna say these things happens everywhere. Yet the kindness of the irani people and the generosity makes me forget what happened to me at the airport, that taxi driver, hotel or that restaurant that charged me double for a meal.

I am a white Indian and I have faced racism just for being white in my school.

I am black American and I worked in Africa for 2 years. Yes, I was treated this way too. They knew I was a Westerner, but I think the degree to which you experienced it was a bit higher.

It's not just whites mate, I'm Black British, Nigerian. Me and my mum went to Nigeria, Lagos. At the airport they demanded money from us before letting us go because they said my middle name was spelt wrong on my passport. HELL my mum had a big money belt under her clothes but she didn't give them a penny!!! Lol

I’m black American, it’s also being western. I’ve had these experiences. They think we have unlimited money and compared to them, we do. I hope you see this comment.
