There is a difference between legality and reality. I feel that if you can be evicted from "your" property then you don't own it. You are merely paying rent. Ownership implies that no one can take something from you, and you own it until you sell it or pass it on when you die. Dealing with the government can be like dealing with a teenager that likes to play word games with you when they are in trouble or can't get their way.

Extortion is a pretty horrific crime. If you truly owned the property, then no one could demand you make payments for it beyond the sale itself. The money we pay in income taxes is supposed to cover things such as roads, schools, etc. There should be no need or reason for property taxes to even be a thing at all anyways. On top of income taxes, we also have sales taxes, so you're already being taxed twice per dollar, to take that even further and add additional taxes basically means a minimum of 3 times taxed per dollar. Income, sales, property, among other taxes. It's frankly absurd at this point and the fact that people accept it makes it even worse.

its not ownership its a lease from the government

Your home is considered a a sub-division of Commercial property and that is how the gov gets to tax you .... and that is why most every state offers you an Homestead Exemption (for personal use) which is subtracted from the value and then the property tax is calculated.

The gov can't tax your personal use but can tax your commercial use ... the gov hides this feature behind verbiage like Residence or Residential ... but those words are just sub-categories under Commercial.

Unlike in King Charles III's country Nobody in the US is allowed to own land, merely a transferable lease that US citizens rent ( called property tax for some reason) from the government.

We need people to get into the proper positions to abolish property taxes. Schools, roads, infrastructure can have their own costs of use, but you should be able to own your property with no strings attached.

We all rent. Arguably at a cheap rate, but the US government doesn't allow true ownership.

In other words everyone has to pay rent. Either payed to a landlord, the bank through mortgages, or the government by means of taxes, it all comes back to the benefit of the government eventually.

If someone can take it, you don’t own it. Just my opinion

I always feel like I'm leasing my own property. Even when I paid it off I still get a huge property tax bill and that thing keeps increasing as well. I get the schools and the roads thing but that doesn't make me feel any better about it.

There are homestead laws in some states leaving you equity up to a specific amount. The tax sale buyer is gambling your willing to play along with his games. The tax is unconstitutional though.

As current law, yes "renting" from the gov. but this taxation is unconstitutional.

They can't take your property, because it was never yours to begin with

When I go to pay my property tax I always refer to it as rent, That is essentially true. The tax collector standing behind the bulletproof glass does not find that statement humorous as She always has that look on her face 😒🤨 when I say that. In addition to paying "rent" every 90 days, you cannot make any improvements without "permission" from the town officials. When you do make improvements, you have to report what the cost was so that they can increase "your rent". If you do the work yourself, they will assess the rate that it would have cost to have a contractor do the work. This will be a higher rate, thus you will receive a higher tax. I just received a letter from the tax assessor's office that I can expect an unannounced inspection and walk-through of my house sometime between May and September so that they can reassess my taxes. I just had a reassessment 3 years ago the reason I was told was to lower my taxes, though my taxes ended up somehow being increased. You can contest the assessment that is given for your property by hiring an independent assessor and paying for it yourself. They do a walk through and gather comparative sales for the size of your house and their sales price and present the results to the township tax assessor. They use their comparative sales and throw in a few that are larger properties than yours. They then offer you a settlement that is higher than what your house is worth. I was advised that it is not worth the time to contest the result at the County level as they are political appointees, so you take what savings you can get. It is true that if you do not pay your taxes, your house and property will be sold at auction. If you refuse to leave your house, men with guns will come to your house and physically remove you and place you into a cage. if you resist they will kill you. That said, I am so grateful to live in the Land Of The Free And Home Of The Brave!🥺😞😁
Just an afterthought to those who have worked very hard, have a beautiful view on a large piece of property and have no mortgage. If a developer friend of the town officials likes what you have accomplished, The township officials can take away your property through a recently expanded law called emminent domain, pay you what "they" think it is worth, usually way below market value and give it to their friend. One dude who had a very nice riverfront property and had that happen to him saw the handwriting on the wall. He quickly sold it to a Corporation, "Toll Brothers" before the township could enact the eminent domain... somewhat of a pyrrhic victory at best.

This is why I moved to a place with enough land to build a couple small rental houses. No matter what as long as I can keep the houses in good shape I can rent them for more than I have to pay any bank or government monthly or yearly.

I could be buried there and have a trust to keep them all as rentals and a big memorial...:-)

There should be no property tax as you paid tax on the land when you purchased. You are taxed twice. There should NEVER be an ownership tax!
There should NEVER be a reason why the government can force you off your own land!

you own the house but rent the land and can be evicted at any time if the government feels like it.

They tax literally everything these days and taxing the land you own makes nothing yours, it feels like a subscription service to live on your own land and it feels silly and unconstitutional

In any other market, this would be considered an illegal practice. Think how fast the law would come down on people trying to charge people for a car they already paid for. Or anything else for that matter.

You have to pay property tax so the school district can build their 4th baseball field and for all the women teachers who retire at 45 pensions till they die at 98.
