I have had atrial fibrillation for 20 years and beaten it back with cardioversions, an ablation, and sotalol. Still NSR most of the time. When asking my whether a pacemaker could be installed to cardioconvert me when I go back into afib, he said NO, it would be quite a shock and was not a good idea. I don't disagree with him, and thought it might answer someone else who is wondering.

I got the answer I was looking for, I got diagnosed with afib few months ago ! my doc decided to put me on beta blockers which significantly slow down my heart rate and went under 50, even after reducing my medication dose it still didn't change much ! so I guess I would have to put one of these pacemakers soon ! :/
