It is dependant on the hardware and the drivers. Most people are just simply too stupid to set up their drivers correctly, from experience, I can say that I had better gaming performance for Savage2 on linux than on Windows.

Mac's specs (Mac as in an OEM PC) suck. Heaven Bench for Linux with OpenGL 4 runs better than Windows with Direct3D 11.
