This song was from his movie Jazz Singer. The story basically was about him wanting to be a performer instead of a cantor in his father's synagogue. I have always felt that the song was about all immigrants, but specifically about Jews fleeing Europe.

I saw Neil live in concert. He came on stage at 8:15 and didn't leave for over 3 hours. When he walked off, the music kept playing, and a couple minutes later the music started for America. When he came back on, the entire audience got to their feet, and we sang along with him. The building was actually vibrating with the sound of the voices and the clapping. It was amazing.

I'm a proud Canadian but I've gotta admit, y'all got it all over us in the patriotic songs category! While sometimes Americans are seen as over the top with the patriotism, I also think we are not as outspoken enough with ours. Like with most things, somewhere in the middle there's the perfect balance of pride & humility. All in all, I'm glad y'all are our neighbors!
