Donald Trump, the US President-elect, said on December 16 that Turkey will play a crucial role in determining Syria’s future after rebels toppled Bashar al-Assad’s government earlier this month. Turkey, a NATO member, supported the rebels whose takeover of power in Damascus marked the end of Syria’s 13-year civil war. On Saturday, Turkey reopened its embassy in Damascus just two days after its intelligence chief visited the Syrian capital.
