Could cutting-edge nuclear technology push this rural community into the future?

Kemmerer, Wyoming has depended on a coal-fired power plant for electricity and employment for over 60 years. Now that the plant is scheduled to close in 2025, Kemmerer’s residents are looking to a new nuclear energy reactor to replace it. Could pulling the plug on coal power mean boosting the economy and reliable jobs for generations to come?

Thank you for this. The people in Kammerer whom you interviewed were articulate and certainly seemed to have thought things through. BTW, as someone who grew up in Alberta, I must say that the scenery in the region was lovely--it reminded me of "home".

I love this way of finding communities that have identity and expertise in energy production and bringing in new tech. Great piece!

This is great news! The demand for electricity is huge. Why use old technology to power the future?

4:21 So close! The steam doesn't heat the salt - the salt is already molten hot, and the amount of steam it can generate can be modulated.

Great news! We can’t replace coal plants fast enough.

Such an awesome project for the community and much needed for the country. Only issue with this tech is the nuclear waste. I do wish the US woukd build a pilot thorium reactor soon.

Cost of any new technology is initially high but even the newest nuclear technology is competing with much lower cost alternatives. It remains to be seen whether it can be commercially competitive.

That desert needs some rewilding. Too much grazing all the time.
As good as that plant.

No one with any true non-vested knowledge of these subjects has the slightest concern about increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide (up t0 1500ppm); we are however deeply committed to deep reductions of pollution. No one with any true non-vested knowledge of these subjects spews the misnomer "fossil fuels." Use of the new nuclear technologies is applauded; the micros, the SMRs. and the IV and V generation large are all great opportunities for the general goal of vastly reduced pollution, especially its accommodating effect on the electrification of transportation..
