Hephaestion actually met Alexander praying at the shrine of Patroclus while Alexander prayed next to him at the shrine of Achilles. Achilles and Patroclus were lovers, and they based their relationship off of them a lot. Basically, Patroclus and Achilles were their couple goals.

I’m not disputing your claim on Alexander’s relationship with Hephaestion, but historians know for a fact that he wasn’t homosexual. And before you blow up on me, I’m not saying he was straight, so just hear me out.

It is definitely possible that he may have had sex with men, but there is clear evidence that he, at the very least, regularly slept with women in his adult life.

He had a harem composed of 365 different women, one for each day of the year. Each night, they would walk around his bed and he would pick one or several which he wanted to sleep with that night.

Not only that, but he also had not one, not two, but three wives. His first wife, Roxana, also had a son with him, but they were both killed in the civil war after his death, to destroy any potential claimants to the throne.

It should also be noted that there is no EXPLICIT evidence that claims that Alexander slept with men. It has been SUGGESTED by some accounts based on rumors, but there is no account that outright states that he had sex
with men, whilst every source of him having sex with women was stated in a detailed way and written as a matter of fact.

Yes, it could be argued that homophobia is the reason there aren’t any such explicit accounts, but the thing is, people in Antiquity did not view sexuality in the same way that people in the modern day do. It was believed that anyone had the ability to have sex with anyone and that they would still gain pleasure from it. Saying that someone was gay or bisexual in Antiquity is an anachronism. People weren’t labeled into different kinds of sexualities, so people didn’t look upon anyone’s sexual preferences as weird. Men were still always expected to have sex with women, but people didn’t see men who only had sex with other men as someone who was ‘different’. It wasn’t seen as something you could only do if you were born differently, it was seen as something anyone could do if they wanted to.

Therefore, there wouldn’t be a reason for homophobia to have an effect on historical accounts, because sexual orientation - and therefore homophobia - as a concept hadn’t even been invented yet. As such, they wouldn’t have any reason for not explicitly stating it as a fact, if Alexander really did sleep with men, which further casts doubt on the validity of the accounts that suggests he did.

I’m not saying he was straight, he could’ve absolutely been bisexual, bi-curious or pansexual. But the only thing that historians know for an absolute fact is that he slept with women. So he wasn’t gay, but he could’ve been bisexual.

I’m not trying to start an argument, just wanted to post an explanation of why the topic of Alexander’s sexuality has so much debate surrounding it.

His mom was not mad he wouldn’t have sex with women she was worried he wouldn’t produce an heir. Homosexual relationships were quite common in ancient Greece and was not frowned upon or looked down upon. A huge misconception about his mother, she actually was known to be quite supportive of Hephaestion and Alexander

Whenever I think of secretly queer historical figures, my mind always goes back to Salvador Dali. "But he was married to a woman" - that doesn't mean anything. His relationship with Federico Garcia Lorca was incredibly interesting to say the least and his wife was ridiculously jealous of Lorca because her husband loved him more than her and everyone knew it. They sent each other a LOT of poems and letters fueled with sexual desire and were known to have had a deep bond between them. When a Lorca historian wrote about their romance, Dali wrote the historian an angry letter, saying he had dulled down their true romance, turning it into nothing more than a soppy novela when it was far more than that. When Dali got old and bad with dementia, the only word he would respond to was "Lorca". He forgot his wife, his family, his entire life's work but he never EVER forgot Lorca. He would recall moments he had shared with Lorca yet couldn't even recognise his own paintings from around that same time in his life. The love between those two is something you don't see a lot of nowadays and I would kill for what they had. When Lorca was assassinated in the Spanish Civil War, Dali always blamed himself because he hadn't tried hard enough to convince him to flee to Italy with him. It makes me feel fuzzy inside though that he never forgot him, even in the throws of dementia on his deathbed. That's true love.

No, Alexander was not gay. But he could have been bi! He did make love and actually love many woman(excpecially because of the whole 365 harem thing and his wives) but he did have a very intimate relationship with Hephaetion including haveing no one play the flute for three days when he died. Whether it was a romantic relationship or not it still debated upon but two things are definite:
1. He had a very close relationship with Hephaetion
2. He liked woman to some extent

I remember last 9 weeks in school my history teacher was talking about Greek history, and Alexander the Great was in our notes. Since we were supposed to turn them in, I added at the bottom of his note portion “his lover was Hephaestion” to see if he noticed. Said teacher (Mr.W) was walking around and saw my notes.
He grabbed my paper, lifted it up, and said for the whole class to hear
“Miss. [last name] is right. I want all of you to write ‘Alexander the Greats lover was Hephaestion’ under your notes.”.

Every notes afterwards, all of the people we wrote about had their lovers/wives/husbands in the notes, reguardless of gender

Idc, to me these two were lovers, true soulmates. From all I’ve read about them Alexander seemed to be a huge simp for Hephaestion ❤

Anne Frank is gay, and one day in school we were learning about her. We were watching a video and the video was talking about her journal, the video said she wrote about normal teenage girl things such as boys and in my head I was like “no she didn’t, get your information straight”
