I love how accurate the film was with this. In a survival situation even though you can see a jet airliner there is ZERO chance no matter how big your signal fire/flare is they're going to notice. You'd literally have to set off a LARGE military grade bomb that would likely gain the attention from every International government.

As much as you're tempted, do NOT set off signal flares/fires in a survival situation if you see a jet flying overhead.
