I spent my entire life despising sports and started dating a mega sports fan a few months ago. He has tried valiantly while we watch games to explain as much about baseball as he can to someone starting with exactly zero knowledge about it and I truly pity his suffering. I'm a Brazilian guy...I played soccer junior leagues as a teen, up till I was 16, than I got into jiu jitsu and mma..today I am 31 and I saw a guy playing a game called MLB 24 ROAD TO THE SHOW...than I went and started seeing some real life highlights of real games. Now I just wanna learn this damn game IRL. Goddamit, I would trade my BJJ purple belt for the chance to have known this sport at an early age...

I played ball in highschool, and I loved everything about the game. I played catcher and caught every game for my highschool team except for a single inning where I was moved to right field against a team that kept hitting fly doubles into right field that would get dropped by our younger outfielders, and I caught 3 hitters in a row to save us from complete humiliation in a 10-2 game.

I wanted to play pro ball. I wanted to catch in the big game. I loved the teamwork between myself and the pitcher. I loved defending home plate and tagging runners. I loved the deception and trickery of the setup and the catch. And I was pretty good at it.

Only one problem. I couldn't hit a ball to save my life. As a catcher I could follow that ball and snag it right in the pocket of my glove 99% of the time, but put a bat in my hand and I couldn't see the ball, where it was going, I couldn't tell when to swing, and I struck out 80% of my at-bats. The rest were either walks or lucky ground singles to left field.

My point is, yeah man, you're spot on. Hitting a round ball with a round bat is one of the hardest things to do in sports. But I will forever love the game. It has everything. Luck, skill, strategy, tactics, drama, feuds and complete unpredictability. Baseball is the greatest.

Outstanding explanation... as a brazillian i'm used to easy to understand games like soccer, basketball and handball. I learned the fundamentals of football watching the NFL, playing Madden22 and watching youtube videos. Baseball isn’t as known in Germany as it is in the US, but this strongly reminds me of a game we used to play a lot as children. We called it “Brennball” or “Burning ball”. We had about four to six bases depending on the size of the field, and two teams. In Team A, a player had to kick or throw a ball as far away from the other team as he could, and then start running from base to base. If he manages to get back to his starting position, he scores a point for his team. But Team B also had a base in the middle of the other bases, and you could only run as long as it took them to get the ball back to their base. If you’re between two bases when the ball hits the base of Team B, you have to go back to your starting position and Team B scores a point. So the challenge was essentially to get the ball as far away as possible, to run as fast as possible, and to decide whether to play it safe and stop at a base or risk running to the next one before the other team recovers the ball.

I am a baseball player (amateur/ premiere level) and there are sooo many rules in baseball that it is really hard to explain them. Great job!
