Anterior cruciate ligament rupture (ACL) - a succinct look at ACL injuries including the common methods of injury, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, surgery and rehabilitation.

Transcript:

The ACL is the Anterior Cruciate Ligament which is one of two ligaments found deep within the knee joint. It is very important in providing stability to the knee. The ACL is commonly ruptured in activities which require fast changes of direction. Often the individual will hear or feel a popping within the joint and there is instant pain.
The knee usually swells rapidly and extensively and it's often difficult to fully straighten the leg. If an ACL rupture is suspected the leg should be elevated, ice and a compression bandage applied. Medical help should be sought and an MRI scan is required to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment of an ACL rupture is either by surgical reconstruction using a graft or by conservative or none surgical rehabilitation. This involves strengthening the muscles around the knee to provide support to the joint. The decision on whether to operate is based on the activity level of the individual and the degree of instability of the joint. Either way an ACL rupture usually requires a six to nine month rehabilitation programme.
