The Vipeholm Experiments - Twisted Human Experiments

preview_player
Показать описание
From 1946 until 1951, the Swedish Government, with funding from Sugar and Chocolate manufacturers, carried out one of the most disturbing experiments into the effect of sugar on a person’s teeth. Human subjects were fed high sugar diets, including a specially created toffee designed to stick to teeth. These human subjects were found at the Vipeholm Hospital, which housed people with various learning or mental disabilities, who were unable to consent to the 6 year long experiment. By the end, those forced to eat the high sugar diets were left with dozens of cavities each, without any follow up treatment.

As a swede i can confirm that we have something called lördagsgodis (saturday sweets) which means that chips, candies and sodas are only for the weekend. Dental care is free until your turn 24 and and after that you will get 30 to 60 dollars once a year to ensure that you get your yearly dental checkup. In sweden many drink companies are switching to sugar free since they are more popular than the regular sugar versions.

"Feels no pain even if you held a lit match to their lips"
That is such a specific thing to say, there is no way he didn't go around burning people's lips.

It may be „just“ rotten teeth but after having various cavities and inflammations until last autumn I can barely imagine how painful this was.

When you've suffered the relentless pain of toothache, you can appreciate how heinously cruel this is.

I had a cracked molar that got infected, and I can tell you that it was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. When the dentist told me that it would be best to pull it, I was more than ready to just get it over with. I can't even imagine these victims having to live with untreated dental pain indefinitely.

So many people don’t realize that most of what we now know medically, have horrifically disgusting backgrounds such as this. It’s one thing to have volunteers for experiments (which lets face it, some of the volunteer experiments were pretty bad too), but to have non consenting individuals from children to adults is so heartbreaking. Let alone individuals with disabilities.

Wow. Tooth ache is one of the worse pains.

Imagine your family giving you up. That’s enough trauma to haunt an entire lifetime. To be tormented with evil experiments, knowing your family left you there alone, is just a devastating existence.

My teeth are hurting just watching this. I had a mouth full of cavities as a child in the 50's, and my parents didn't believe in wasting money on frivolous things like a dentist. I can remember walking to school on a cold winter's day when I opened my mouth. I'll never forget the pain when that frozen air hit my cavities - horrid pain.

Yes, our modern, comfortable society doesn’t only stand on the shoulders of giants, it also stands on piles of corpses.

This is the dental field's version of the Tuskegee Experiment. I never dreamed sweets could be used in very highly ethically questionable medical experiment, but here we are.

As a survivor of annorexia in my teens, I drank coke rather than eating for a couple of years. The acid worn down my enamel, and I have sever dental issues. The absolute pain of severe dental decay is unbearable, seriously especially if you get an abscess under your tooth. Honestly it’s the kind of pain that makes you want to cut parts of your own body off.

To leave people suffering deliberately with this is just unthinkable. The pain is just so unbearable, not to mention the risk of diabetes with all that sugar.

FYI I’m not anorexic anymore, I’m in my 30’s now and finally have my dental health issues under control. Dental pain free and don’t need any new treatments when I have checkups. 2 crowns, 6 fillings and 3 extractions later 😥

I don't understand how people can do such horrible things to other people and not feel bad about it

Whats more horrifying is that untreated cavities can cause sepsis

When I was receiving my undergrad degree, one of my professors was (and still is) an expert in one of the bacteria that causes the biofilm that causes tooth decay. The reason why she continues her unrelenting campaign against this bacterium is because tooth decay isn't just bad teeth; decaying teeth means a bad heart (usually vegetative heart valves, but often cardiomegaly as well). These poor people, to suffer painful teeth, and they may have died early, too. And for what?

As a parent of a child with special needs, this video made me sick. I could go on and on about my feelings, but my feelings don't matter. What matters is the pain and suffering these people went through and the fact that it happened even after international law specifically said it can't be done. The sad part is, these types of things are easily forgotten to history and people are still treated like garbage. It makes me worry about my child's future when I'm no longer around to keep them safe. Thanks for covering such a heart wrenching story. I hope the world becomes a better place for humanity, especially those who can't defend themselves.

Tooth pain is some of the worst pain that you’ll ever experienced in your whole life, and in my opinion, can be compared to labor pains.
Trust me I’ve experienced both. 🦷🤰🏼

As someone who causes their own cavities, I know firsthand how painful dental problems are. I’m disgusted that anyone would force that on people who can’t defend themselves. Poor things. 😢
