I get this question a lot. We all want the most out of our practice sessions, but we feel lost or that we aren't headed in the right direction. I hope this helps put a new perspective on your practice sessions.
THANKS Zak!

To me, playing the guitar is not about impressing others, but being able to give others the beautiful feelings and emotions I feel from music. Thanks.

As someone who's been playing for 3 months seeing you make mistakes is so comforting, the other fancy channels just give me anxiety. Thank you for keeping it real ❤️

I have finally sat down and got serious this month about playing the guitar. I have literally played everyday for the 2 weeks. Fingers sore, yes, worth it, yes. Today I was able to play for more than 8 hours today just on different picking patterns with my first three fingers and thumb. Developing my fine muscle memory with my picking hand. I started playing banjo a few years back but stopped because I got lazy, so this type of picking was familiar. I found your channel by accident and now I’m a sub. Great stuff and love your approach to many of the skills needed to get going and play well.

Great discussion as usual Ian. I always laugh when you react to a clinker, total ownership and totally relaxed about it. That easy-going nature is what makes you the best teacher on the interwebs. Thanks

I really enjoy your lessons, much too complicated for me at first but now thanks to you and your patient calm teaching I know my way around the fret board have improved rhythm and have so much more fun playing . Excellent

I love that you said your hate metronomes. I play piano and I'm learning guitar and I thought I was the only one who HATES the Metronome.

When it comes to timing, it's definitely a weakness for me. Probably because my guitar gods since the early 70s are Steve Howe and Steve Hackett… Complex time signatures and rhythms. Thanks for the great videos and I'm ordering a lot about getting better at the blues.

I very much like your teachings and I fully agree with this video. Thanks. I am a student not a teacher. But what I also learned is, that every student is different and likes or dislikes certain things. The 3 things I consider my main boosters for progress have been: 1 play with backing track or looper or other instruments like piano etc or also together with good musicians. 2 follow your heart. If you want something, do it and do not give up easily. For me, learning a new piece is always pain and frustration in the beginning, but in the end it is often joy and fun. 3 select non boring pieces for your standard repertoire which serve as general finger exercise. In this way you have to practice only minimal scales and finger exercises.

Hey thanks for posting this I've been checking out your videos. I'm happy with my timing and technique, been concentrating more on theory and musicality you're right, theory helps a lot but it does not save the day got to have a balance of it all. I come from the shredding school from the 80s, been making a conscious effort to break out of that mindset.I'm still confused with a lot of theory and sometimes my head actually starts to spin when I study it. Taking it slow and easy with Pentatonix for now..

Ian....the video is only 16 minutes. If someone can't invest 16 minutes to improve their musicianship on guitar....you need not apologize to them. BTW...your voice echoed inspiration but your good looks really competed with that shiny head stock.

NO PLAN B That's why I have been encouraging all my friends on stringed instruments to learn and play Amazing Grace and When its Gone and make it their own. I Especially love the NGDB Will the Circle be Unbroken Vol2 versions. Blessings
