Thank you so much. I was never taught about emotions in any shape or form growing up. And not just that but I was actually abused by my family for literally being emotional. Marsha's techniques are slowly helping me learn and piece together what I was never taught and never learned. Hopefully this gets me to where I need to be because I experience emotional agony non-stop.

Emotions don't always escalate. Sometimes invalidation causes them to be stuffed down

I relate so much to the last few sentences of this clip. What do you do if it’s important to you and it’s not being heard or invalidated? You escalate… but the invalidation escalates on the other side as well. It’s a process that begins with feeling isolated and in need because you want/need to be heard socially in a way that lets you feel understood but it’s a process that ends with having insult added to the original injury. You wind up with the original isolation and need you had, plus the collateral damage from tactics used to shut down being heard and to explain why your feelings aren’t valid.

I think in a lot of families invalidation is modelled and taught as the way to keep the group ‘safe’ form something unwanted or (billed-as) intrusive.

I was in DBT therapy for about a year when this person shows up in my life and tell me “I’ve been talking to some self help guru and she said emotions don’t exist” i told him you’re wrong and here’s why and that was the end of that “friendship” 😂

If my Mom would have screamed, "RUN, !" I would have frozen. Fight, flight or freeze < I freeze. That's from early childhood issues.

marsha m linehan sometimes reminds me of an abby lee miller if she had went to therapy as a kid instead of dance classes

Most therapists don't get this. I could see them forever be putting myself in danger and they say nothing.

These videos are really good, but how can I watch the film? There doesn't seem to be a video hosted on the website, Facebook page or this channel and I don't live in an area that will receive a screening.

Parents dont just think this. Everybody does.

And yet, when you look at RO-DBT, it's for people that are over-regulated.

This woman is old but fairly sexy. Love smart people talking about things that we can all identify with.
