I absolutely agree with you. I'm on my way of becoming a graphic design and I find all you say true! Thanks for dropping all that knowledge. I've been following you for a while and always find useful tips.

3:14 myth 3, tech - That's so true! When I was at the beginning of my career, I thought that I need a mac to do my designs, or if I didn't have it, my clients and other designers would not respect my work. It's not true. I improve my skills with the tech I had, and it is totally fine. I think you should invest in devices after you have some knowledge about what you are doing, and what you need. Great video insights :)

I believe the Golden Ratio is a helpful tool.
Its a good starting point.
I believe it can make things look more pleasing and help identify size increments (current 'font size' multiplied or divided by 1.618).
BUT
don't believe it will 'always' work because using a visual 'eye-balling' technique can definitely on most occasions produce better visually pleasing compositions.
It is just a guide or a starting point.

Good video, helping unlock peoples potential

I'm afraid that golden ratio article is pretty bad. It even doubts that Parthenon uses the golden ratio even though you can see it everywhere there. I suggest you read more articles.

1) The fact that it's not exactly 1.618 doesn't matter at all because that accuracy is enough for the human eye. If one side of a rectangle is 10cm and the other 9.99cm it still looks like a square.
2) The golden ration has been used extensively in ancient Greece so that Keith guy clearly doesn't know much about history.
3) You can find it in many logos like nissan, toyota, atari, pepsi and google and even the proportions in plastic bottle designs follow it in some cases.
Don't like it? Fine with me, but those facts are just meh.

I needed to hear point number 2 today. I've felt unfulfilled in my regular job for quite some time, want to get out of the industry I'm in and have even contemplated some stupid actions.

I came home today and when I heard point number 2 of a "degree not being 100% essential", I immediately felt relief. I honestly had to hear it.

I've done logo and brand identity design for friends and a few paying clients, but nothing concrete. I came across your channel recently and I'd just like to say thank you for your content and for giving me some of my confidence back 🙂

These points are 101% true...
As I have just started my Graphic design career having 9-10 satisfied clients... But I didn't use the GOLDEN RATIO till now in any of my designs + I don't have any diploma or degree rather + I don't even have Tablet, I just have a Laptop and Mouse and that is it..

These points are true

Couldn’t agree more! I have a BFA degree, and yes, anyone don’t need a degree to be a good designer. But education is really helpful when you talk about concept and really helps us deeply understand the knowledge about what we do in professional stuff. So, for anyone who wants to deep dive in the knowledge aspect (not the skill aspect), no need to hesitate to get a degree! It will still useful eventually. And the gadgets, yeah sometimes the better gadgets helps us to work in a comfortable way, but the fact is we don’t always need a certain gadget to make an artwork. Gadgets are just tools, the most important aspect is our quality as an artist. Once we understand what we do, we are unstoppable! Anyway, glad to have so much insight by this channel. Keep up the great works!

I totally agree with your opinion Tom. We totally think the same, and i'm glad to hear that. there are so much myths in graphic design, especially about the tech, everybody want to have the most recent technology but the tech doesn't make the designer. Thank you Tom.

I can totally relate to 2 & 3, I'm a self-taught designer and still learning skills, and I'm confident enough that if u have skills and knowledge, u don't need to give a thought about degree and certificate. And coming to 3rd myth, sadly I still want an iPad or graphic tablet !! hopefully soon :(

#2 and #3, I've believed for 40 years. As for #1, I'm with Yves Béhar, quoted in the linked article: “it’s more informational than dogmatic . . . It’s important as a tool, but not a rule.”

Like training wheels on a bicycle, some tools help a designer get started. Zero constraints is terrifying. Designing in a box is a great way to begin. It's just not a great way to continue. I'm totally over the golden ration, the rule of thirds, plenty of the things I used when I started learning design. But without all those constraints, I'd have struggled far more than I did.

Nice. I don't know what's right or wrong about those 3 myths, But I'm learning motion graphics by my own anyway.
I'm still very happy that now I can stay home and learn things while the world is going crazy out there.

Me (when starting graphics design) : Golden ratio is the best.
Me (after some years into graphics design industry) : Use circles of different sizes to induce hierarchy and contrast.
Golden ratio is good, but it's not practical to use it in every design you make.

This is one I'm fully on board with. I think the golden ratio and Fibonacci sequence techniques are just pure myths that limit design composition and therefore creativity. I did go to university but I studied creative advertising, to focus on substance whilst I was learning and honing my design style with youtube, I tell people who want to start this career to never "just do/learn" graphic design adding other skills and interest in this career can really go a long way. And finally gear, I think it's important to go to the very edge of what your gear can do before thinking of upgrading your gear. However, when investing in a computer I would rather advise buying a good one that will last a while instead of purchasing a new one every year, but I think this is a case by case scenario! Once again, loved the message and I would love to see a video where you show your concept process (sketches, thought process..) I think this a crucial part that students or beginners easily skip.

Aah thanks for setting me free! I've been reading up on the golden ratio but my designs just didn't look great when teying to stay inside that box.

I'm brand new to the world of graphics design and feel so inspired after finding your channel. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

I completely agree with your thoughts on the 'Golden Ratio'. I am BFA, passed out in 2004. Our professors never thought us anything of that sort. Secondly, I am in this design industry for over 16 years now and recently I came across this golden ratio thing. So all these years I had been a bad designer? I saw many videos on the golden ratio and some clearly show how the ratio is being forced on great masterpieces where it actually doesn't fit at all! Art is completely creative and it can't be bound to a set of mathematics equations!

Completely agree on all 3. I myself don't have a degree in design and I'm self-taught with current experience over 10 years. Since my 2nd year I already was working as a freelance designer with multiple music labels. Never used golden ratio in my life and am still using a 2012 laptop and a mouse to do all the stuff. Not even on the current version of Illustrator or Photoshop but it all still gets the job done. It's like saying "I am a professional skater but I can't skate in DC shoes" for example. It's not the tool, it's how you use it and all about the skills.

I do have a degree, but it is in engineering. Which I don't really find fun. Now, I want to get into graphic design so this was a relief for me to hear that you don't have one either.

Been doing this for 18 years. Everything you said is spot on. (despite the fact that I have a degree)
