In 1950, Dubai was a melting pot of peoples from around the Gulf. The indigenous Arabs were mainly pearl divers, while about half the population consisted of merchant families from Persia and India who used their foreign connections to turn Dubai into a trade hub for goods between Asia and Europe.

But a lot has changed since then.

The discovery of oil drastically changed the social fabric of Dubai. In this video, we'll explore how Dubai transformed into the highly stratified society we know today, with some of the highest numbers of modern slaves in the world.

“No one talks about it”, yeah, right. Everyone does, nothing new.

It’s a shame you didn’t even highlight how it’s Western companies that sub contracts and benefits greatly from the so called “slave labour” under shell companies, which then rents out those workers to other local companies. Where thousands of British registered companies are in the UAE that benefit directly from this.

Dubai, rising from desert sands, thrives as a global hub due to its strategic location between Europe, Asia, and Africa—geography fuels its success.

I have lived and worked in Dubai low end jobs. This documentary is wrong. Because most people who live in crowded places, do it by choice to save money. Dubai simply provides legal loops holes for people to save money.

Similarely Dubai is pretty free place. If you have money you can do anything, no limits - if you work hard, then you come out well. Legally it is a great place for poor people to work because they can save a lot of money and send back home.

None of this happened under Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed, nor would it happen now if he were alive

You should make a video about UAE's aggressive foreign reach!
1. it's involvement in wars in Yemen, Libya and Sudan
2. UAE tried to control all ports in East Africa from Sudan to Tanzania, which it clearly has no use for but just to curtail competition!
3. UAE wants to take control of Socotra island off the Somali peninsula.
4. UAE tried to take 50% of land in which Sudan and Ethiopia have dispute over (UAE proposed that 25% of this area should be given to Ethiopia, 25% to Sudan and 50% leased to the UAE for 99 year!)
5. UAE took control of the port of Berbera in Somalia's secessionist region of Somaliland by making agreement with that region bypassing the week central government & almost recognizing this region as independent country clearly so it can keep the control of the port! UAE also deals with other Somali regional governments like Puntland and Galmudug and Jubbaland.
In short, just like it's exploitation of the foreign workers, UAE exploits poorer countries and war zones specially in Africa and Middle East!

In 1991 over 75% of Dubai's population ran away under the percived threat of Saddam. Dubai's foreign population could do the same again. They have no reason to stay if the threat is great enough.
