General John Raaen was one of the first Rangers to storm the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, June 6th, 1944.
Under intense enemy fire, he led men through mines, machine guns, and chaos to break into Hitler’s Fortress Europe.
Today, he stands as the last living D-Day Ranger officer—a living witness to one of history’s most defining battles.

He could feel the wind on his face and says he got out fairly nicely. What a different generation they were.

The men and women who were in WW2 are the greatest generation of Americans.

These things happen. I had a brother who was a platoon sergeant in the Rag Tag Circus. He told me about a German 88mm shell exploding in their chow area near him. A piece of shrapnel struck his belt buckle and folded him in half. Two of his men grabbed him and flung him into a fox hole. The only damage to him was a bruise and the wind was knocked out of him.

My uncle jimmy was in the 101st n 82nd, when he was with the 101st during battle of the bulge he and two other guys took a jeep check out a route near some rail road tracks later then f around n find out went over a Soap box mine the one kid took a nice beating. My uncle was a SGT told the driver to take the kid back as he recon the area further for Germans then later to find the same Germans trying to set up another soap box mine and took them both out. He was also award later a silver star for manning a browning 1919 machine gun during a German assault on their camp funny story behind that the box attached to the gun had warm soup instead of .30cal 😂 he said that was the most pissed off moment during the war, every second counted! Sgt Jimmy Raulin was my uncle I’m proud to say some of the stories told as much as he could.

that's crazy that a 75 mm shell would bounce off a jeep hood even if it was a max distance shot where most of the velocity was gone plus that would be insane accuracy to even aim for the engine block of the vehicle.

Dude must have ejected himself out of that seat naturally. Youd be amazed of your capabilities when it comes to wanting to live.
