I think many people don’t actually appreciate what a fantastic voice and RANGE Ron Moody had! I mean, how many people could actually sing this better or even equally to him? I can’t think of any! Sheer brilliance and Ron Moody is sadly missed. R.I.P Ron, you pure GENIUS ❤️

Ron Moody made Fagin his own. He didn't like the book version and made an oscar worthy character in my opinion.

Ron Moody deserved the Oscar for this! Impeccable characterisation.
Undoubtedly the best Fagin, musical or non-musical!

I love this preformance because

In the book, we hated Fagin, hell, I was *happy* when he was executed at the end, If you’ve never read it, the guy plotted for Oliver to be kidnapped by his own brother, would physically abuse Dodger and Charley for coming home empty handed, had pimped out Nancy since she was a girl, and much more. He’s a bigger villain than Sikes and Monks (who was cut from the film, Monks was Oliver’s brother who was a former pupil of Fagin’s) combined, he was the actual bad guy in the book, We were supposed to detest him. Not to mention how much of an anti-semitic stereotype he is.

But in the musical, They made Fagin so much more sympathetic, he’s a grey character, he’s not bad or good, but you aren’t supposed to hate him like the book, on the contrary! He’s a character you can relate to, a character you feel sorry for, a character who could very easily be your favourite, and you would have a reason for that, being that he does want to become a better man (as this song shows), and it’s made clear he cares about the boys for example, see at the start when he tells Dodger to look after Oliver, even if he’s going, which is bittersweet in itself and shows how much of a morally grey character he is again. At the end of the film, you don’t want Fagin to be arrested and hanged like the book, you want him to get away, and when he does, you’re shocked, because he was *this close* to redeeming himself and doing a heel face turn, but he dosen’t, and it’s a great ending.

And I haven’t even said how Ron Moody in particular was basically born for this role, and because of thw actor’s talent and charisma on the screen, you really enjoy the performance.

I find it interesting that in a musical called Oliver! The character named Oliver is actually the least interesting. In fact all of the other characters seem to be more focused on by the story, Oliver is more or less just a plot device. Doesn’t make it a bad story, it’s just unusual and intriguing

This song popped into my head this morning and I had to find Ron Moody’s excellent rendition. Aaaah, that’s better!

Such a fantastic performance, so nuanced and fully realised. I was obsessed with this film growing up and I often go back to watch bits of it now. Ron Moody will always be Fagin to me.

I think it really speaks of the fear of change, the unknown. Why most people find it hard or impossible to go back to school or seek another profession. The gravity of life so to speak, makes it hard to take off.

One of the greatest physical performances of all time.

this song shows that Fagin is not really a bad guy. he is just a little misguided. in spite of his hobby of teaching innocent little boys how to steal there is some good in him.

He could have won 10 Oscars for this role, just brilliant.

I've seen Ron Moody in other roles but this was the role of his life. His performance in Oliver! made it my favorite musical. He's the face & voice of Fagin forever!
