Fun Fact: Ron Moody had actually retired from acting when they decided to make this movie, and they persuaded him to accept the role. He received a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination. He also portrayed Fagin again in the 1983 Broadway revival. Brilliant performance!

One of the best film songs of all time. Total brilliance, that's stood the test of time.

I know the character of Fagin as traditionally portrayed hasn't exactly "aged well", but when I was a kid and watched this movie (not understanding the more problematic elements of his portrayal), I really actually liked the character. Not just because Ron Moody played him so well, but because I always interpreted him as, yes, a criminal, but as someone, who like the boys he take care of, has been screwed over by the system and is an outcast. I always saw Fagin as providing a surrogate family to kids who would otherwise starve on the streets. Of course, he's greedy and out for himself, but I always imagined that he cared for the boys and tried to protect them from Bill Sykes' more violent tendencies.

A shame young Jack Wild (playing Artful Dodger) had a bit of a rough time of it after Oliver. He was an alcoholic by the age of 21 and burned his way through the money he had made in the films he had done. His drinking triggered three cardiac arrests and numerous hospital stays in his life. By his own admission in the 1980's he would frequently drink three to four bottles of Vodka a week, often accompanying these with half a bottle to two bottles of wine a day. He finally got himself sober in 1989.

He died on 1st March 2006 at the age of 53, after a long battle with oral cancer which is attributed to his heavy drinking - he was unable to speak for the last 2 years of his life, owing to an operation on his cancer, having part of his tongue removed and his vocal cords being cut.

I just got cast as Fagin in my schools production of Oliver. Hopefully I can live up to this legend ♥♥♥

An extraordinary piece of film that is successful on so many levels: direction, camera movement, performance, choreography, art direction, hair & make-up and more. It's a sublime piece of work that is a fine accompaniment to a wonderfully witty and imaginative piece of songwriting and orchestration.

This is one of my favourite songs of the movie, and this will always be my favourite version of Oliver Twist.

When I in 5th grade, I was the most believable pickpocket. Whenever we would rehearse this song, I would take a handkerchief or a pocket watch without Fagin feeling a thing. One time, I did it so well he stopped singing and looked at me thinking I didn’t take anything. I then held up my watch and he just stared at me. They were ask scared I might actually be a real pickpocket XD
